Open Call for Artists focuses on the Angeles

An open call for artists seeks multi-media works relating to the Angeles National forest, and the portion of California Highway 2 known as Angeles Crest Highway, where it traverses the San Gabriel Mountains and the Angeles National Forest.

Highway 2 - The journey and the destination, welcomes works which relate to the highway itself and the destinations it leads to, the modes of travel it lures and the experiences it offers. The deadline for art sample submissions via email, and for sponsorship commitments, is July 1, 2014.

The show will be held in September at the Modest Fly Art Gallery and Studio in Tujunga.

Painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, mixed media works and forest textile art, in traditional and contemporary styles, are welcome.

The art of the spoken word will be shared at the opening celebration by Hupa tribal descendant Kat High, Native American storyteller and the creative force driving the success of Haramokngna American Indian Cultural Center in the Angeles for over a decade.

Stretching from the ocean to the desert, Highway 2 spans the breadth of the California experience. Where it crosses the San Gabriel Mountains it is known as the Angeles Crest Highway, and it is in this portion of road that there is an undeniable magic, an allure, a mingling of scenic wonder and technical road, beauty and danger, tranquility and excitement.

Wound about all of this, integral to the expression of the experience, there is art. Art that comes from the bounty of the forest, art that is an expression of the sounds and sites of that land, art that captures bits and pieces of the scenery, art that is inspired by the trees, the sky, the song of birds, the roar of finely tuned engines, the winding highway itself. We will bring the art of the forest - and an awareness of the destinations which lay within it - to the Modest Fly and to the greater foothills community through this exhibit, and through an extensive public relations effort that will highlight the art, the artists, and the places in the forest that many local residents may not even know exist.

Sponsors contributing $100.00 or more to the effort will be credited in all print and internet advertising and announcements as well as in the gallery. The Sunland Tujunga Neighborhood Council Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee has committed $100.00 for refreshments at the opening celebration. There are four remaining sponsorship opportunities available at the $100.00 level.

Selection of works for the show will take place on or shortly after July 2 and the show announcement will be created from a number of these pieces, as well as sponsor names and logos.

Highway 2 - The journey and the destination is co-hosted by The Modest Fly Art Gallery and Studio and Redbird. Redbird is a non profit Native American and environmental association celebrating twenty years of community service in 2014 and connected to the Angeles through a variety of projects, and a land base, Chilao School, now open for art, cultural and environmental workshops and events.
