Horse Cruelty Case in Monterey County
An abandoned and injured horse was found in Monterey County on Sunday, April 6. The under-nourished horse was discovered near San Miguel Canyon Road in Royal Oaks, and was suffering from a severe and painful leg deformity likely caused by lack of veterinary orthopedic surgery, along with overgrown hooves. Unfortunately, the gelding (approximately 12-15 years old) was humanely euthanized on the advice of equine veterinarians to relieve his suffering.
“We ask anyone with knowledge of this abuse to come forward,” said Stephen Wells, executive director of the Animal Legal Defense Fund. “Other animals may be at risk of severe neglect and abandonment.”
Under California’s Penal Code § 597s animal abandonment is a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months imprisonment in county jail and/or a $1,000 fine. Additional charges could be filed under neglect statutes as well. Along with ALDF, the SPCA for Monterey County is offering a $1,000 reward, bringing the total reward offer to $6,000.
