In loving memory of David Hayden

by No Compromise!
On Friday, January 31st 2014, our movement lost a dedicated, gentle warrior by the name of David Hayden. It would be impossible to summarize all of the ways that he worked on behalf of animals, partly because there were so many ways, and partly because his humility kept us from knowing them all. Behind the scenes he was the primary driving force at No Compromise magazine, a brave frontline activist at demonstrations, and a man who, despite limited financial resources, always gave what he could to sanctuaries, conferences, and activist projects.

David lived in Santa Cruz and worked at UCSC.

I shared a jail cell with him on a few occasions, marched by his side on others, and loved him not just as a comrade in the struggle but as a generous friend who stood by me even when I didn’t always deserve it. His passing is a reminder that the best fighters are also the best people: kind hearted, soft spoken, humble, and ready to raise hell when injustice rears its ugly head. We will miss you, David, always.

In memoriam: David Hayden
To: UCSC Community
From: Greg Gaither, Director of Applications and Project Management, ITS

January 31, 2014

With sadness I write to share the news that David Hayden, a longtime ITS employee, has passed away.

David joined the campus in 1998 as an application programmer in the telecom group. Over the years David played a key role in many critical initiatives, including the implementation of telecom billing and accounting systems and the CruzAlert emergency communication system. His coworkers appreciated his hard work, positive contributions and fun and easy going nature.

David was a devoted animal and human rights advocate and loved the natural world. He had a great sense of humor and was known for his personal and professional integrity. He loved Warriors basketball and was an avid roller derby fan, a sport he liked to share with his friends and colleagues.

He will be missed by all of us who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. Details regarding a memorial service will be shared as they become available.

David Hayden was one of the most authentically selfless activists I have ever met. His tireless fight for animals, humans and the earth we share, is unmatched. Someone earlier referred to him as a "quite giant" in our movement. I cannot say it better than that. He was gentle and kind and his stellar organizing humbled those around him. David, you will be missed by many. Be in peace, brother. إن شاء الله

My most vivid memory of David Hayden is from the protest in Little Rock in 2001. Cops on horses were charging the crowd, and some people were being pepper-sprayed. I remember a few younger activists were pushed up against a fence, and visibly terrified, and David stood in front of them, as the cops on horses pushed him and waved their batons, and he didn't flinch. I never even told him about how much that image has inspired me over the years. He was a soft-spoken guy with an incredibly strong heart. And the worst sweet tooth I've ever seen. Rest in peace, David.

The first words I ever heard David say were, "What's your badge number?" He was speaking to two UC Davis police officers who were harassing and following a group of young protesters. For years he was the primary force behind No Compromise magazine, a serious campaigner against vivisection, and a quiet funder of projects ranging from campaign videos to animal sanctuaries. It is hard to describe his impact- his influence was everywhere. It is so hard to believe that he is gone.

There was a small crop of people who really kinda guided me by their words and actions when I first got involved with AR stuff in the late 90s/early 2000s. David was for sure one of them. Truly a big loss for the community.
