Women Leading Drive for Change in Honduras
Kate Raphael talks with Professor Suyapa Portillo Villeda about background to the upcoming Honduran elections and the woman who stands to make history as the country's first president from outside the two major parties. Audio 30:12
Listen now:
Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, whose husband Manuel Zelaya was ousted in a coup in 2009, has emerged as a leading contender for the presidency. Her party, LIBRE, formed out of the social movement opposing the coup and the neoliberal policies of the new government. Meanwhile indigenous leader Berta Caceres, another powerful woman not afraid to talk about patriarchy, is under indictment for organizing nonviolent resistance to defend indigenous land from energy developers.
Kate Raphael of Women's Magazine talks with Suyapa Portillo Villeda, professor at Pitzer College. Portillo also documents and advocates for human rights of LGBTI people in Honduras, who have been increasingly threatened since the coup.
