Veteran Firefighter to speak at Chilao School

Lifetime firefighter and twenty year Chilao resident Lance Weinrich (USFS) will be our guest speaker on Sunday at 2 PM at Chilao School as a part of this year’s last Open House and Curriculum Planning Party. Lance’s 35 year career has spanned hot shot crews, smoke jumping, and air tactical support throughout the western United States, and includes the Station Fire of 2009 in the Angeles National Forest. His knowledge and experience is extensive, and locally relevant; Lance and his family lived less than a mile from Chilao School for two decades.

Everyone is welcome; please share this with fellow firefighters, fire students and their teachers. Lance retired from the USFS and moved to Idaho in May and we are very fortunate to have him here this weekend and willing to share with us.

The Future of Forests is the theme of our work. We will create a blueprint for introducing future generations to the Angeles National Forest, and to the larger issues and challenges that face both forests and people. Everyone is welcome - we especially look forward to meeting current and aspiring educators.

We will be joined by Leslie Miller (Sacred Heart Academy), Randy MacLaren (Glendale Unified School District), Shelley Owen (travel schedule permitting, Glendale Unified School District), members of the local Native American community and other guests. Together we will create a vision for Chilao School and the tools to implement it. If you would like to contribute curriculum for any grade level, from K-12, please contact us so we can discuss your idea and the grade level it addresses. (We are also developing collegiate level study programs and welcome you to come with your insights for higher education programming as well. We are here to network with and learn from one another).

Hikes Planned - Everyone Welcome

On Saturday, October 19, as part of our Curriculum Planning Party and open house gathering, we’ll be taking a short, easy hike along the Silver Moccasin Trail across Chilao Campground. The trail portion is roughly 1.5 miles with mild inclines and traverses burn and unburned areas and variety of vegetation types. We plan to leave at 4:30 PM, carpooling to the area where we will start our hike, and to have a vehicle waiting at the end of the trail for those who want a ride back to the school.

On Sunday, October 20 we’ll have a sunrise walk and photo opportunity in Charlton Flat along the road to Vetter Outlook, departing the school in vehicles around 5:45 AM. If you feel inclined you can hike to Vetter or for that matter, all the way back to the school along Silver Moccasin Trail. You can also walk about one hundred yards and catch the sunrise as it comes up over Windy Gap. Charlton Flat is located at mile 47.5 on Angeles Crest Highway and we plan on arriving there about 6AM - everyone’s welcome.

Spend a while or spend the weekend. Chilao School is located at an elevation of 5,200 feet in Chilao Campground. From the 210 Freeway, take Angeles Crest Highway (Highway 2) north 24.5 miles to Chilao Road, turn left, follow signs to school. Bring sturdy shoes, sunglasses, and warm clothing; the nights can be cool. Garage parking for motorcycles; no vehicle pass needed if parked on school property, camping available for participants.
