UNITING FAMILIES must be the bedrock of your new Immigration Law, Congress!

"On July 19, 2013, The Chinese Progressive Association (CPA), Asian Students Promoting Immigrant Rights through Education (ASPIRE), and community members held a rally for immigrant justice calling on Congress to honor the contributions and sacrifices of our immigrant ancestors by reforming the U.S. immigration law.

"San Francisco has been home for  immigrants for decades. Our families come with dreams of having a better life and better opportunities for themselves and next generations. Our ancestors worked hard and sacrificed a lot to improve their lives. Likewise many new immigrants are facing similar struggles. We are here to amplify these stories to show the experiences of immigrants then and now, while facing criminalization and discrimination.

"To honor our ancestors we are having a lantern ceremony. In Chinese culture traditionally, lanterns are to guide people home. We are using them as a symbol for guiding our families to reunite with us here. Many people are lost in the process of immigration as a result of the broken system. Furthermore, the immigration system separates many families. Lanterns are to help guide our loved ones home; each lantern will carry a word (in Chinese) of what we wish for our families: unity, family, hope and love. These are the words that we use to motivate ourselves to continue on despite the struggles we face."
