STOP the Joint Domain Awareness Center Plan

by EG
Oakland City Council meeting on July 30th (5:30 p.m.) will meet provide a public hearing on expanding the Domain Awareness Center from the Port of Oakland out into the community of Oakland. DAC will install cameras capable of license plate readers/facial recognition and tracking of people (incl. children in public schools) and the data will be stored (and maybe shared with whom is another question). People like Edward Snowden have put their lives on the line to warn us about the NSA. We now need to heed their warnings and do our part to stop the surveillance state from taking root in our community. PLEASE COME OUT on Tuesday 7/30 after 5:30 but before 8 p.m.
The Oakland City Council will allow the public to comment and you have until 8 p.m. to sign up to comment or you can fill out a card online here: http://www2.oaklandnet.com/Government/o/CityClerk/s/SpeakerCard/SpeakerCard/OAK032373 *MUST INCLUDE ITEM #35. If you choose not to speak you can fill out a card (when you arrive for the meeting) and offer up your time to someone who is speaking who may want more than 1 or 2 min. to speak.

What is very very worrisome is how this kind of environment will affect our children. Putting cameras into our schools will not make our teachers/children safe from harm....it will condition them to accept being spied on. This is not about harm reduction or preventing crime or stopping fires or other environmental hazards from occurring. Here is an interesting report on the use of cameras in SF and the failure of cameras to prevent crime: https://www.aclunc.org/issues/technology/blog/san_francisco_surveillance_cameras_dont_reduce_violent_crime,_study_finds.shtml

Please invite your neighbors/friends/organizations/unions to come out. We need a huge turnout of people to inform the city that we will NOT tolerate expanding surveillance beyond the Port of Oakland shipping zone.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
