The Uhuru Movement is now working to transform the Uhuru House African community organizing center by painting the interior and remounting the refurbished murals of historic African leaders on the outside of the building. We need your help to make this happen. Groups of volunteers will be organized every Saturday from May 4 - June 8 from 9 am to 5 pm to complete this phase of work.

The ultimate goal of the Uhuru House renovation is to install Uhuru jiko - a community commercial kitchen - in the Uhuru House. We are raising the budget for this project in 2013 and expect to complete the work in time for production for our 2014 holiday pie campaign.

Uhuru House represents more than 30 years of struggles led by the African community for justice and to win community control of housing, health care and education. The Uhuru House has always represented the interests of working class African people,
putting in place programs for self reliance and community economic development.

With African unemployment at record levels, and with studies showing that 75 cents of every retail dollar spent leaves East and West Oakland, this kind of neighborhood based economic development has implications for developing jobs, and flourishing community commerce.

Participate in this critical campaign by volunteering on May 4, 11, 18, 25 or June 1 and 8!
