Rally for Yes on 37 Held in Palo Alto

by No GMO Sue
Dozens rallied at the corner of Embarcadero and El Camino Real last night. With signs and songs they declared, "We have a right to know what's in our food!" They encouraged passersby to vote YES on Proposition 37 that would require labeling of food that is not GMO free.

Fifty countries around the world, representing more than 40% of the world’s population, already require GMO labeling, including all of Europe, Japan, India and China. Why can't we?

On the NO side, the campaign is funded by giant pesticide and junk food companies with a track record of making false claims about the safety of their products. The “No” campaign’s two largest donors, Monsanto and DuPont, are the same companies that once claimed Agent Orange and DDT were safe. Prop 37 doesn't ban any foods. That is simply not true. It only requires that GMO-containing foods be labeled with the phrase “partially produced with genetic engineering” anywhere on the front or back of packages.

At the Palo Alto rally one sign read, "Coastal Farmers from Pacifica to Pescadero Want Labels!" The Raging Grannies dressed one of their own as a two-headed, genetically modified, chicken. The chicken led a group that included all ages in singing about Monsanto's tricks.
