OPD gets free facial recognition/video enhancement software to target Occupy Oakland

by FTP
So, right-wing Southern California company Cognitech has given it's pricey Tri-Suite11 video enhancement software to OPD to hunt down supposed Occupy Oakland scofflaws. Pricey, because the software is so expensive that Cognitech doesn't list the sales price on their website. Right-wing, because Cognitech is assisting Oakland police in its attempts to violently crush Occupy Oakland on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce and apologists such as Oakland's own ineffectual dem-lib poodles. Right-wing, because Cognitech is donating the software to one of the most notorious, violent, and over-militarized police forces in the country, a department on the verge of falling into federal receivership due to its historic record of abusing the Oakland populace. Right-wing, because Cognitech is craven enough to donate the software to OPD and issue a press releases hoping to bump up sales of the software. Right-wing, because Cognitech chooses to use an African American as the face of the "crime" that the software promises to help solve. Cognitech CEO Lenny Rudin pretends to be empirically detached from the politics of the gift: "Pictures tell the truth and when enhancing these videos and photos forensically, unlawful acts will be seen and analyzed clearly and scientifically, no matter who committed them." No matter who?!? Don't hold your breath waiting if you think OPD will use the software to identify the cop who shot Scott Olsen or the one who threw a grenade at those offering medical aid to Scott Olsen, or cops who beat, shot, and otherwise abused countless other occupiers over the last four months. Count on OPD to use it to find whoever pushed over the scale model of City Hall or whoever threw an empty water bottle at an armored police line, though.

The software smooths out graininess in images. It can be used for faces and for license plates. The software can do weight and height estimates for subjects captured in video. Welcome to 1984!

Here is the actual press release from Cognitech:
