West Coast Walk For Life - anti-abortion zealots invade SF

by Rubble
For the 8th year in a row, thousands of Christian-church-based activists traveled in from across the Country to rally and march through the City pushing their message that abortion is murder and needs to be outlawed. The annual rally takes place on the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. In this audio piece, hear keynote speaker Reverend Clenard Childress. Despite an illogical, irrational, emotionally-charged assessment of abortion and abortion providers, he has been keynote speaker 7 of the 8 years. As painful as it is to listen to such outrageous and inflammatory stuff, the talk is important to hear because this anti-abortion movement is increasingly successful and taking over the current underpinnings of government policy-making. Childress has a website titled blackgenocide.org. The home page quotes him “The most dangerous place for an African American to be is in the womb of their African American mother.” The site furthermore has detailed depictions of Planned Parenthood clinics as if abortion advocates and a murder factory heavily situated in low-income non-white communities perpetuating genocide for non-white races. Despite incredible distortions of the reality of situations , he is some type of a hero to this white-led movement.

Childress continues to absolutely spew venom about Barak Obama as the most “pro-abort” President in history. He is not happy with Obama despite Obama not only going back on his promise to re-insert abortion coverage into public health programs but his unilateral decisions to eliminate abortion coverage from private health care plans in his health care overhaul. Obama did not go for the push to eliminate Federal funding for Planned Parenthood. In his speech, Childress admits not to care about US law and order, but “God’s law”, which apparently outlaws abortion. He also continues to describe the movement as the “real” civil rights movement, with a fictional depiction of a right-wing Martin Luther King as its guiding light.

The following is from the Guttmacher Institute website, a recent analysis. While white women have the highest total number of abortions and abortions are had by all races and ethnicities, African American women have a disproportionate percentage of abortions compared to their percentage of the overall population. Analysis shows that abortion correlates negatively with income, that lower-income women have higher rates of abortion. Much in the overall demographics of abortion suggests that one of the major factors in getting an abortion is concern over the ability to support and care for the child. Teenagers have a very low percentage of the overall percentage, with the percentage dropping in recent years.

Childress and other speakers describe the current legislative push as a two-part strategy: personhood and parental notification laws. “Personhood” gives human rights of an individual to a fetus. The intention is to outlaw abortion as murder, while also in some situations criminalizing abortion providers and agencies when something goes wrong during the birth process, Childress explains that the hardest current push is in California and Mississippi. Parental notification laws sound good to a lot of people, but a closer look shows potential for horror stories with teenage women who need to get an abortion in a way that is confidential from the family, within the health care industry, and - in California’s last unsuccessful version - the Youth Authority.
