Port of Oakland evening shutdown
An estimated 3000 people marched to the Port of Oakland Monday evening to stop the late shift of work.
Activists gathered at Frank Ogawa/Oscar Grant Plaza downtown -- the original site of the Occupy Oakland encampment -- and at West Oakland BART for a two-pronged descent on the port. Around 6pm organizers announced that the evening work shift had been canceled. Previously activists partly shutdown work during the morning shift before dawn.
Following the announcement, protesters gathered at the Hanjin terminal for a General Assembly. Speaking by phone, with his message relayed via the "human mic," Dan Coffman, president of ILWU Local 21 in Longview, said he wanted to thank all occupiers and their actions provided an inspiration to keep fighting. "Solidarity to all workers, all students throughout the world," he said. "This is the rebirth of the labor movement."
The Occupy Oakland GA previously decided that the port blockade would be extended if any of today's west coast blockades met police repression, as happened at least in San Diego, Seattle, and Houston. About 200 people agreed to remain and others planned to return to shut down the next shift at 3am.
