Blue Angels Get the Finger as they Fly Over October 6 Federal Building Occupation

by Allie Mosca
As hundreds occupied space in front of the new Federal Building on October 6, the dreaded Blue Angels polluted the skies above SF. Speakers were forced to pause, and protesters showed their displeasure.

Those raising a fist or a finger in the air to vent their anger at Blue Angels flying over San Francisco on October 6th included two elderly "Raging Grannies".

Hundreds had gathered in the afternoon to protest the continuing wars, and the financial and environmental crises we find our country in. The display of militarism in the sky above was the ultimate irony. Sad faces watched the planes pollute our air.

The Blue Angels fly as part of the demonstration known as Fleet Week, an enormous waste of tax dollars in a time of economic depression. Business interests welcome the militarists with open arms because it generates tourism in the city.

As a City, San Francisco theoretically rejects war and embraces peace. Yet, the City still sponsors this event which glorifies militarism.

There is more on the Navy's Blue Death's illegal low flights over heavily populated San Francisco, wasting tax dollars and oil, causing terrible pollution and noise, all to recruit for the military, now in its 30 year, invited by the Democratic Party of San Francisco. The peace movement is large enough to stop the recruiting at Fisherman's Wharf as that is the only reason Fleet Week exists. The people of San Francisco overwhelmingly oppose this air show over a city, which is completely illegal. After all, we closed lots of military bases with our peace movement. Here is the history:
Our peace movement got rid of Fort Mason in San Francisco by 1970, Fort Barry’s Nike missile site in 1974 on the North Side of the Golden Gate Bridge, Fort Cronkhite, bordering Fort Barry, in the 1970s, Hamilton Air Force near Novato in 1976, the Air Force Station on Mt. Tamalpais in the 1980s, Fort Baker near Sausalito in the mid-1990s, Moffitt Air Field near Sunnyvale in 1994, the Presidio of San Francisco in 1994, the Navy bases in Vallejo and Alameda in 1996 and 1997 respectively, the Oakland Army Base in 1999 and the Inland section of the Concord Naval Weapons Station in 2007.

WE ALSO KICKED THE COLUMBUS GENOCIDE PARADE OFF MARKET STREET AND SENT IT TO FISHERMAN'S WHARF IN 1992, the 500th year since the arrival of Columbus in the Americas.

And above all, vote Green, Terry Baum for mayor and a Bingo No on all the propositions. See

I love the photo of the Grannies! Wish I could have been there to flip 'em off myself! I love giving the big FU to anything that encourages war or militarism!

Reminds me of something. A few years ago, before an outdoor music festival of all things, they had one of these military fly-overs followed by the national anthem. I didn't give them the finger (wish I had!) but my friend and I remained seated on the ground smoking cigarettes during the song. It felt great! Got some dirty looks and rude comments and I had to tell them that this is not Nazi Germany yet and I'll have a lot more repect when this country is not all about war and killing.
