Rage in the Streets March Against Police, San Francisco , 7/19/11: photos, 2 of 2

by dave id
In response to the San Francisco police shooting of Kenneth Harding in the Bayview on July 16th -- and the rash of recent police killings in general, including the July 3rd killing of Charles Hill in Civic Center station by BART police -- a "Rage in the Streets" march was called for July 19th starting at Dolores Park. As the march approached Powell Street, police following the march ordered demonstrators to move to the sidewalk, raising boos and heckles from the crowd. Within a couple of blocks, though, marchers moved off of the streets and onto the sidewalks surrounding the trolley car turnaround at Powell where over 20 were arrested and a San Francisco Chronicle photographer was shoved to the ground hard and fast by SFPD. These photographs are a continuation of the photo series begun at http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2011/07/25/18686025.php.

This is also where police formed a line after July 11th justice for Charles Hill BART action (http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2011/07/18/18685184.php#18685201), but there were no arrests previously.

It's unclear on what legal pretense police moved in on the group. An order was given to get off the street and onto the sidewalk on Market Street, but no dispersal order was given to protesters on sidewalk at Powell Street.

These 17 or so, and shortly thereafter another 4, were known to be arrested. Police say there were two arrests earlier in the march. It is unknown how police came up with reports of 35 arrests for corporate news outlets on the night of the march and the next day, and 43 two days later: http://articles.sfgate.com/2011-07-21/bay-area/29797426_1_protest-mission-district-mission-police-station.

Demonstrators ran along for a block following police van up Ellis until police moved in and began tackling people. Two were arrested on Ellis (one pictured here on pavement) and two around the corner on Cyril Magnin.

Susana Bates was pushed down fast and hard, visibly shaken afterward by the unprovoked assault. The fall broke her camera flash attachment. Despite being aware of this brutality by SFPD, the San Francisco Chronicle chose to not even mention the incident in their report that appeared in the paper the following morning (http://articles.sfgate.com/2011-07-20/bay-area/29793042_1_fatal-shooting-gunshot-residue-police-officers), but they did see fit to mention an incident between a protester and a CBS-5 camera person from earlier in the day. QUESTION: Had it been a protestor who slammed one of their photographers to the ground, do you think the Chronicle would have reported it?
