Bay of Rage: Anticut #2 Mobile Disruption for Libraries, Oakland, 6/17/11: photos, 1 of 2

by dave id
Bay of Rage held the second in a series of summer anti-austerity mobile protests in Oakland on the afternoon of June 17th. This time the march attempted a walk-through of the Citibank at 14th & Broadway, but the interior set of doors was locked before demonstrators could enter, in effect shutting down the branch at least temporarily. From there the doors of the Wells Fargo at 12th & Broadway were blocked, and locked, temporarily disrupting another City Center bank branch. On 12th Street, as the march proceeded, police rushed into the crowd and grabbed at least three people for arrest, throwing them to the ground. Again, around the corner on Clay Street, at least one more person was arrested. No one had done anything remotely illegal other than perhaps walk in the street, although Oakland police will likely trump up charges against those arrested. Corporate media is reporting that ten people were arrested, the likely source of their information being OPD as most arrived too late to witness any arrests themselves -- but not even close to ten people appeared to have been arrested before the march reached the library. Corporate reports also note that charges include failure to disperse and battery on a police officer. From Clay Street, the march turned up 14th and proceeded on the sidewalk to the Main Oakland Public Library on Madison, where Food Not Bombs served an early dinner and three librarians came out to speak to those assembled. Fourteen of eighteen Oakland library branches are under threat of possible closure. The Oakland City Council is set to announce their next budget on June 21st.
