Cal NORML: California Assembly Rejects Bill to Reduce Marijuana Cultivation Penalties

by Dale Gieringer, Cal NORML (dale [at] canorml.org)
"The state legislature has once again demonstrated its incompetence when it comes to dealing with prison crowding," commented California NORML Director Dale Gieringer, "With California under court order to reduce its prison population, it is irresponsible to maintain present penalties for non-violent drug offenses. It makes no sense to keep marijuana growing a felony, when assault, battery, and petty theft are all misdemeanors. Legislators have once again caved in to to the state's law enforcement establishment, which has a vested professional interest in maximizing drug crime."
Cal NORML Release - Jun 3, 2011

SACRAMENTO - The California Assembly rejected Assemblyman Tom Ammiano's bill AB 1017 to reduce marijuana cultivation from a mandatory felony to a wobbler. The vote was 24-36.

The bill had been sponsored by the DA of Mendocino County, but was opposed by the state DAs association.

Numerous liberal Democrats failed to vote, while some actually opposed AB 1017, among them Sandre Swanson of Oakland, Jerry Hill of San Mateo, and Mike Feuer of Los Angeles.

the reason they no want pot is because it shows you whats hidden by mainstream america. not because it is a ''drug''. pot shows you what nature is doing, and shows that the america is lying about whats necessary for life. food water clean air are all that is needed. cannabis shows you that and the war machine america doesent want you to know that. cannabis brings a reflection of you. it is a ''reflector oil'' .want to know the truth, try cannabis. it will show you what the ''authorities'' are hiding. THAT is why they dont like cannabis. it uncovers the lie that racism and war are the only things possible!

I'm the one who is writing and publishing this and no I am not a news reporter, just an ordinary person like all of you are.Prison overcrowding, hmmm.Well for one thing locking up people who use and grow marijuana simply should not even be happening especialy in this time and age of our country and lives.I can see locking people up for cocaine, heroin, meth, prescription pain killers atc,but marijuana? Please people.Marijuana is not harmful nor is it and type of a threat to our society as a whole at all.The only reason there are deaths related to it are because it being illegal we have the good old drug smuggler operating at full capacity mainly the mexican cartels more than any of the tohers such as Columbian etc, their mainly concerned with the cocaine and heroin more than anything else. The same holds true right here in our own back yards.People have to grow it using secrecy which isn't so good an idea as somebody is always gonna end up talking. We have the very many gangs that have been allowed to run rampant for so very many years here and they know only one thing which is violence, but the vast majority of them and they moeny isn't made with marijuana but rather the harder and dangerous drugs pretty much so.If our deaf, dumb and blind government would legalize marijuana for adult use then the killings, smuggling and gang related stuff would go away literaly.Of course there will always be the coke, meth, heroin and prescription pain pill thing going on,thats not ever going to go away entirely but if marijuana were to be legalized for adult use it would definitely and certainly put a major dent in the sales and the wanting of those drugs here.Adults polled have said they prefer the feeling they get from using marijuana over that of any alcahol products which is a major plus for pot use.Marijuana doesn't kill it's users nor does it cause life threatening deseases unlike all alcahol and tobaco products which do and an enormous level. Many country's have legalized adult use of marijuana with many others preparing to do so.They see it as what it really is.It's a major cash cow witrhout a doubt, they have also seen very significant drops in drug related crimes as well as very significant drops in the numbers of teens using it as well. They see it as the treamendous medicinal aide that it is and has been proven for decades thru study's and research fro everything from cancer to shronic pain to certain mental issues. If we legalized it the federal deficit would be eradicated wthin 2 years easily and that using the very conservative estimates which means it would bring in a whole lot more realisticaly. It would put every single stae in the country back in the black within 1 year easily as well.No more dwindling s.s. funds,no more cuts in medicare-aide either among a very wide host of very many other much needed programs which our people need badly. It would of course also create many jobs.Right now we are literaly thrwoing away mega billions every single year in a vain and wasted attempt to stop people from growing and using marijuana, thats not including the smuggling aspect. The wasted mega billions are at the federal level so thats not including the billions each stae throws away every year trying to stop it from being grown and used also.We could use these mega billions at the fed level to help bolster our borders as it is not any states reponcibility to protect our borders but rather it is the federal governments responcibilty to protect our boders. These billions could be used to hire thousands of people to patrol our borders as using arial coverage, cameras, walls, fences and motion sensors is pretty much a total waste of moeny and time. The only real and viable way to protect our borders is by "putting feet on the ground"Legalizng it would also get rid of very many cases of kidney and liver problems and deaths from people such as myself having to use narcotic pain relievers ot help keep our chronic pain at aby as well as the narcotic tranqs and sedatives wgich many including myself have to rely on in order to live some type of half way normal life.I'm a 100 percent disabled nam vet along with a serious and totaly inoperable very bad back ijury which I got from working and forced me to start using my s.s. alog with my VA disability. My VA docotr knew I used marijuana from 1993 up to the year 2000,it was never a problem until 2000 came along, then it became a problem with the VA so if I show up positive for say THC they will "punish me by taking away my pain killers for up to 6 months, although I find it strange that they will not take away my narcotic tranqs and sedatives which i find rather strange needless to say.Anyways I am a very staunch supporter of legalizing marijuana for medicinal use but also I support legalization for adult use as well.Right now our country is in a very bad financial state of affairs with it growing worse every single day,if we were to legalize marijuana for adult use and not just for medicinal use we would see a whole lot of our financial problems go away rather uickly at that.It would free-up thousands of jail and prison cells so they could lick away those who really are a threat to our society as marijuana growers and users are by no means a threat at all.Well, thats about all I have to say for now.I hope people will read this and make some kind of sense out of all of my rambling on about legalizing marijuana for adult use and understand what I'm trying to get across.Until later I wish all of you peace and happiness in you'r lives and good heath as well. Thanks for you'r time, itis greatly apreciated very mych so
