Pols can't cut Untouchable Tyrannosaurus, can they?
[ a rant for May Day 2011 ]
....
....
Dear voters,
Most politicians say they want to cut federal spending.
Except for this, that, the other.
Pols need to look like they're cutting macro,
while cutting micro.
Or nano. Almost nada.
Except that each faction wants to circumcise their enemies.
Republicans want to zero Planned Parenthood, and NPR.
Perhaps Democrats would secretly like to cut the pension of Bush the Lesser, but they dare not speak.
If you add up all the specific cuts, those which some politician is brave enough to own,
these add up to a laughably teensy percentage of the budget.
Each Normal incumbent, right or left or middling-mushy, wants cred
as a deficit hawk, without the pain and risk.
A Normal pol is a sheep playing wolf on teevee.
[ Not needing to look Normal is revolutionary Ron Paul,
a fiery Libertarian wearing drab Republican drag.]
....
Is there no scissor-ready fat?
Sure: Infamous ear-marks,
badmouthed by all, totalling up as a tiny fraction of the budget.
...
And then there's
The Untouchable Tyrannosaurus --
military spending, gobbling up 58 cents of each "discretionary" tax dollar
[ nationalpriorities.org ].
To question this insatiable dino,
you don't need to embrace peace
[Thor forbid!].
...
We're fighting at least two and one-half wars AT ONCE.
Here's a shocking thought:
Maybe we could fight one war at a time?
...
Indeed, maybe we could think ahead, for a change?
Like non-politicians do when playing checkers or poker?
Maybe we could choose carefully where and when and how to fight?
Instead of being lured in by liars?
...
"Last night I had the strangest dream,
I've never heard of before
--- that presidents and Congress-chumps,
could learn to THINK about war..." '
