UCB Occupation of Wheeler Hall, Afternoon and Evening Solidarity, 11/20/09: photos

by dave id
About 40 people occupied Wheeler Hall at UC Berkeley before daylight Friday morning, November 20th. These are photos taken after police attacked solidarity demonstrators while setting up metal barricades around the building later in the morning. Corporate media had their live broadcast antennae set up as the occupation had made national news.

The energy in the crowd remained high with serious and not-so-serious chants throughout despite the obvious tension and ever-present threat of police violence.

Within minutes of this photo, and unbeknownst to the crowd, riot police were smashing through second-floor doors to arrest occupiers.

Crowds outside weren't being given the full story by the self-appointed mediators. And it was uncertain at the time if police intended to force their way through solidarity demonstrators to get more police in or arrested solidarity demonstrators out. What people outside did not know was that the "deal" that had been reached to get occupiers out with misdemeanor citation was made with police and authorities and not the occupiers themselves.
