4/24 Berkeley Forum:The Crisis At Pacifica and Building & Rebuilding The Pacifica Network

by KPFA Voices For Justice
Pacifica is now threatened with a decline in listeners, a growing financial crisis and also with a management team which wants to put on national programmers without the input of producers around the network. This forum will have voices from many of the stations nationally and discuss what is happening in the network and what has to be done to make the Pacifica network relevant to the people of this country. This forum takes place at the same time of a Pacifica National Board meeting which will be held at the International House/Center at UCB.

The new interim executive director of Pacifica and a crew of people are now in New York at WBAI to supposedly to rebuild the stations finances and listenership. At the same time the number of listeners and supporters continues to decline at nearly all Pacifica stations including KPFA in Northern California. The ongoing internal crisis is part and parcel of the failure to provide new programming and connect with the millions of people who are looking for an alternative from the corporate controlled media.
This forum will look at what is happening at Pacifica at a variety of Pacifica stations and how the network can be rebuilt to become a relevant network and portal for new, information and alternative views. Included will be views from throughout the country and from participants in the Pacifica National Board Meeting PNB which is taking place the same weekend at the International House at UC Berkeley.

Speakers:
Leslie Radford, LA KPFK LSB and Pacifica National Board
Luzette King, Washington D.C. WPFW LSB and Pacifica National Board
Ralph Schoenman, Producer WBAI "Taking Aim"
Sureya Sayadi, KPFA Local Station Board
Anthony Fest, KPFA Staff Representative On The LSB and member of KPFA Unpaid Staff Organization
Steve Zeltzer, Labor Journalist and Producer, Member KPFA

Now more than ever we need one slate to take back KPFA . Tonight the misleaders of our station are having a $1000 a plate dinner (Ok a lttle exaggeration . But 300 to 500 is close enough ) to ''celebrate '' our 60 th anniversity . So we really need to throw the bums out in our fall election for the station board.
But why is there a KPFA Voices slate again ? We need unity which means one slate against the ''Concerned Listeners''.Not three which last time led to disaster
by Education/Education
Closing your eyes about what is happening in the Pacifica network is not the way to educate the listeners or build an alternative to the Concerned Listeners group or any other group. This forum is organized not for the coming election at KPFA but to get information out from listeners and staff at the various stations. In fact it is critical that at all Pacifica National Board meetings there be opportunities for broader discussions about what is going on at the network.
