How to find out if you have an arrest warrant?

by It's Me
Wasn't sure where to post this simple question. Hope Indybay readers can help
I believe I may have a warrant for my arrest. Is there a way to check on this, and to find out what the warrant is for? I called Warrant Services Division, and they told me to come in and bring ID. If I do that, I know that I would be arrested on the spot. I'd like to find out a little more information about the warrant to prepare for bail, before I do that. I live in the city of Oakland. I thought maybe someone here could help provide me with information.

If a warrant has been issued then there will be a record of it at the courthouse (federal, county or municipal depending on the offense) You can try calling the criminal court clerk's office and see what they will tell you. I know where I live they have computer terminals in the clerk's office where you can look it up yourself. Also, some jurisdictions have online access to their warrants database. Last resort you could pay a criminal background check service to look for you. This may be helpful if you are unsure what county or municipality has jurisdiction over the offense. Hope this helps.

Some jurisdictions allow you to do a free warrant search, e.g. http://apps.sdsheriff.net/warrant/waar.aspx Otherwise, there are various sites that allow you to do a nationwide warrant search, but I'm pretty sure they all charge for the service.
