Through Wednesday, December 31, 2008 Tear Out Your Lawn Challenge
Drought conditions and water rationing often lead to a proliferation
of ugly brown lawns. Now Ploughshares Nursery at 2701 Main St. in
Alameda has a better way of saving water and saving money. The Nursery
is offering a "Tear Out Your Lawn Challenge". Participants in the
challenge will receive a one time 20% coupon good for the purchase of
drought tolerant plants and a free half hour landscaping consultation
with a senior staff member. To be eligible you must remove 40% or more
of your lawn and provide before and after photos as proof. The offer
is good until the end of 2008. Ploughshares Nursery is an
environmentally sustainable business run by and for formerly homeless
residents of the Alameda Point Collaborative. The nursery specializes
in California native, edible, and climate appropriate plants. Many of
the plants sold at Ploughshares Nursery are difficult to find at other
retail nurseries. Ploughshares Nursery is open to the public every
week, Wednesday though Sunday from 9am to 5:30pm

anonEvents, Sunset Promotions and blasthaus invite you to immerse yourself in a SEA OF DREAMS - a multi-stage, multi-environment fantasyland and the Bay Area's most extravagant New Year's production featuring a FULL LIVE SHOW by D.C.'s world-electronic superstars THIEVERY CORPORATION, as well as San Francisco's own national electronic hero BASSNECTAR
anonEvents, Sunset Promotions, and blasthaus have joined forces to create San Francisco’s most elaborate and otherworldly New Year's Eve experience, SEA OF DREAMS. In its 9th year, SEA OF DREAMS will feature exclusive live performances by a massive 12-piece orchestral version of world-electronic superstars Thievery Corporation, as well as San Francisco’s own national electronic hero Bassnectar along with an absolutely stellar supporting lineup. The Concourse Center will be transformed into a multi-stage, multi-environment undersea fantasyland, complete with 3 exquisite sound-systems, circus and cabaret performances, art galleries and interactive art and playzones plus twin midnight spectacles. No effort or expense will be spared to provide a New Years experience that people will never forget. This year's theme "Sea Change" refers to Shakespeare's the Tempest and metaphorically symbolizes the end of an eight-year storm that will deposit attendees on brighter shores that begin to catalyze changes they can make in their world beginning on New Years Eve 2009.
Live performances will also include 20-piece indie-techno-circus act The Mutaytor, Bay Area trip-hop heroes BLVD , and Brazilian all-star band BOCA DO RIO. DJ sets by NYC Basement Bhangra queen DJ Rekha, Bonnaroo resident Motion Potion (Funkonnection-SFO), Santa Cruz legend DJ Little John (Raindance-Santa Cruz), North Bay funkateer Malarkey (Juke Joint-Sebastopol), and SF's world trailblazer Maneesh the Twister (Surya Dub-SFO) will round out the music. Added to this are an overkill of aerials, circus acts, cabaret performances, intense decor and art installations. With more acts still to be announced, SEA OF DREAMS promises to be one of the most sought-after New Year's tickets in the United States.
THIEVERY CORPORATION [full orchestra set]
is “A dominant force in the electronic/dance landscape, the quintessential ambassadors of the sophisticated global 'downbeat generation'” [BPM]. The Washington, DC based electronic collective has always been defined by its decidedly organic quality and this is clearly evident in the rich productions of their recent smash release Radio Retaliation and recent live tour dates. Despite their minimal beginnings, Thievery founders Rob Garza and Eric Hilton have adopted a growing cast of collaborators over the years, vital musicians and vocalists who contribute to a dynamic 15 member live band. Playing sold out venues and festivals worldwide, Thievery Corporation dazzles thousands of music fans every year with their kaleidoscopic live show. Featuring multi-ethnic instrumentation and MC’s and vocalists singing in English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Farsi and Patois, Thievery Corporation’s live show is a stunning representation of the future of world music. At SEA OF DREAMS, Thievery will pull out all the stops to present a New Years set unlike any other in their long history of performances. more ...
BASSNECTAR [w/ The Kitchen Sync] Bassnectar's
insane nonstop touring schedule is catapulting him to national recognition with sold out dates all over the map. The Bay Area native has developed a unique style that is both classic and cutting edge, representing the burgeoning omnitempo blend of all musical genres united by surging ridiculous bass-lines, Bassnectar is one of the few electronic artists anywhere who can headline a tour and sell out his shows any night of the week and the crew has been smashing up venues coast to coast. Best identified by what he calls a “perverted love of bass frequencies” the sound is a freestyle smorgasbord, featuring seamlessly interlocked layers of hip hop, dubstep, glitch, grime, midtempo breakbeat, dub reggae and even metal and punk rock influences. Taking full homefield advantage, Bassnectar dives into San Francisco's SEA OF DREAMS’'09 with a enough enthusiasm to help you kick that coffee habit for the new year more ...
SEA OF DREAMS - For the past 8 years, SEA OF DREAMS has been San Francisco's most creative, spectacular, and lavish New Years event. Created by Anon Salon, this year Sunset Promotions and blasthaus will be joining the team to create the most spectacular rendition to date. Over the years, Anon has made SEA OF DREAMS the perfect combination of high-end talent, top-tier performance-art and decor with underground energy. Drawing much of its inspiration from the Burning Man community, the vast majority of the audience comes in costume and the entire venue is crammed with art of all kinds. Past acts that have performed the event include String Cheese Incident, STS9, the Yard Dogs Road Show, The Dresden Dolls, Bassnectar, Kinky, Brazillian Girls, Adam Freeland, Bassbin Twins, Tipper and Freq Nasty.
