Shut Down the Berkeley Marine Recruiters! March 19

by Otis (sf [at] worldcantwait.org)
Shut down the Berkeley Marine Recruiting Station on the 5th anniversary of this illegitimate war on Iraq! No business as usual. Mass non-violent civil resistance. Youth rally at 11:30 at MLK park next to Berkeley High. Everyone rally at 12:30 at the recruiting station at 64 Shattuck Square. You have a voice, you have a choice. Let Berkeley set an example for the rest of the country and send a message to the rest of the world. We won't allow any more troops to commit these war crimes in our name.
It is not enough to be against the war, we've got to stop it. And we are not going to stop it unless we rock the boat, stir up controversy (make some people angry even), and put our body on the gears of the war machine. Right now, John McCain is calling for 100 more years of war. Hillary and Obama are both calling for MORE troops for the military, even while they suggest that more of those troops should be in Afghanistan and fewer in Iraq. Are they gonna stop the war? No fuckin' way!

Why have the right wing and the media made such a big deal about our actions at the recruiting station in Berkeley? Because we are doing 2 things that are unacceptable to the powers that be:
1) We have crossed the line from symbolic "loyal opposition" protest, to determined resistance that will actually effect the workings of the imperial military at a time when they are having a hard time recruiting more soldiers.
2) We are undermining the ideological justifications for the war which have not only been used to recruit people, but have been used to keep even antiwar sentiment confined to official channels. We are saying: NO, the recruiters don't have a "right" to be there. NO, they aren't entitled to "free speech." Their free speech is lies and it kills people. Their "right" to be there is in conflict with the right of Iraqis and Afghanis to live. And, NO, we don't "support the troops." The troops are killing and torturing for the empire. If we support the people of the world, and their right to be free of bombs and occupation, we can't support the troops that are carrying out war crimes. What we support is the TRUTH.
