Musharraf will attend peace jirga

Pakistan's president has agreed "in principle" to address the closing session of the Afghanistan-Pakistan 'peace jirga' in Kabul, the foreign ministry said.

Pervez Musharraf said he would address the conference after Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, phoned him on Friday, the ministry said in a statement.

"President Karzai said that the president's personal participation would be a source of support and encouragement for the jirga process," a foreign ministry statement said.

"The president agreed in principle to address the closing session of the joint peace jirga."

US pressure

The Pakistani leader had originally been due to attend the opening of the conference on Thursday, but withdrew, citing important engagements in Islamabad.
