SF nude candidate busted at Haight fair
Incident at (otherwise-peaceful) Haight Ashbury Street Fair 2007.
San Francisco, CA:
At the Haight Street Fair, 10 June 2007, nude
mayoral candidate George Davis was arrested by SF
police, while he was gathering voters' signatures
for his nominating petition.
The arrest occured in early afternoon (after 12
noon but before 3pm), at the intersection of Haight
and Ashbury.
At first, Davis was bare from ankles upward.
When officers handcuffed his hands behind his back,
they also wrapped a large cloth around his waist, thus
covering his genitals.
Police led him a few feet north on Ashbury,
and made him sit down on a curb between two parked
cars, where he would be less visible to the public.
During a very long wait, an angry NIMBY approached
Davis. Then the NIMBY confronted one of Davis's
fellow nudists, asserting that street nudes are
"egotists" who damage the Haight fair.
Were the police waiting for a vehicle
in which to transport their prisoner? If so, none
came. Eventually they marched him --
still handcuffed, but now wearing pants --
further north on Ashbury (toward the Panhandle),
and out of the festival area.
Presumably Davis stayed in city police custody,
and/or in the county sheriff's custody,
until around 8:30 Sunday night.
Then he was reportedly "cited " (given a citation,
commonly called a "tricket")
and released.

I worry about this guy's confrontations with
the San Francisco police.
I'm afraid he may provoke an anti-nudity backlash in SF
(as happened in Berkeley in the early 1990s)...

(as happened in Berkeley in the early 1990s)...
The DA's office has already declared that simple nudity is not illegal in San Francisco. So why the police harassment? Are the police interfering in the political process?
If you can't be naked when nudity is not a crime, hasn't the backlash already started?

Re: Candidacy of George Davis for San Francisco Mayor
On June 19, 2007, George Davis left a message at the Gavin Newsom headquarters about police harassment for circulating petitions in lieu of filing fees at various street fairs. George Davis has been arrested three times in three weeks at the Union Street Fair, June 2, 2007; the Haight Street Fair, June 10; and the North Beach Fair, June 16. In all cases, the DA has declined to prosecute and discharged the citations.
The following is a description of the campaign’s platform.
_____________________________________________________________
George Davis for Mayor of San Francisco
This is a one issue campaign which is to Make Golden Gate Park Clothing Optional like the major urban parks in Europe. Gavin Newsom is to be appointed City Manager, because whatever you do, you are going to get him anyway.
--------------- Thoughts for today: ------------------
1. You are free to be nude! You are free to wear clothing! You are free to choose!
2. Nude is not lewd.
3. With ranked choice voting, being Mayor of San Francisco is as easy as One, Two, Three. Give George a ranked vote.
George Davis --- Choice One
Gavin Newsom --- Choice Two
Someone else ----- Choice Three

Note: (1) Campaign contributions of $10 to $500 from San Francisco residents are eligible for $850,000 in public matching funds. The election strategy is to use contributions and matching funds to pay for “free” performance art and concerts as a publicity vehicle instead of election porn like mailings, commercials, and signage. This money is monitored by the San Francisco Ethics Commission and must be spent by the end of Election Day, November 6, 2007. Checks are payable to: “George Davis for Mayor”, 887 Bush St. #504, San Francisco, CA 94108.
(2) Non-San Francisco residents and San Francisco residents (outside the $10-$500 range) will contribute to: “fkk Free Body Culture”, a political action association dedicated to ending the nudity taboo world-wide and promote nudism in sports, recreation and home life.
Now we come to the political issues. After the DA discharge for the Haight Street arrest, George Davis left messages to Chief of Police Heather Fong on June 12, 13, &14. On June 14, he was contacted by Lieutenant Shawyer who said that this was the first time the Chief’s office had heard of the situation and said “thanks for the ‘heads up’ and he would take care of it.” Subsequently, George Davis was arrested at the North Beach Fair.
At this point a reasonable person can assume that the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) is violating the candidate’s civil liberties and petitioning abilities. Now, it is the duty of the mayor’s office to control the excesses of the SFPD or people will conclude either that the mayor’s office cannot control the police or even worse, that the mayor’s office is ordering the suppression of a political rival.
Further interference by the SFPD in the campaign of George Davis will raise these very legitimate political issues: “Voters. Do you want to vote for non-violent artistic freedom, the creation of fkk Free Body Culture, and civil liberties or do you want censorship and police intimidation and harassment?”
George Davis’s first choice is and always has been to campaign without police interference. But if he has to run on the above freedom issues, so be it.
Next weekend, June 23 &24, George Davis will be petitioning at Gay Pride events and from historic precedent, does not expect police harassment. The following weekend, June 30 & July 1, George Davis will petition at the Fillmore Jazz Festival. (He has previously been cited by the police at Northern Station.)
Please notify George Davis (415) 722-2968 of the steps made by the mayor’s office to prevent further police interference with his petitioning for office.
Sincerely
....

SF Pride? Fillmore Street Fair?

Hi Tortuga:
As expected, the citation for the North Beach Fair
was discharged [ on 19 June]
(Code 18, whatever that means?).
My next step is contact with the mayor's office
and campaign leadership seeking that they control the
police department or else hand over these very
legitimate campaign issues to public debate : "Voters.
Which do you want to choose? Non-violent artistic
freedom, creation of a legitimate fkk Free Body
Culture movement, and civil liberties or censorship
and police intimidation and harassment."
The letter to the mayor and the mayor's campaign
staff will be available to you for publication in a
few days.
Thanks for your suggestions for campaign
participation during Gay Pride weekend [ circa June
23-24 ]..
My next "at risk" petition circulation
will be the following weekend at
the
Filmore Street Fair.
Naturally,
George Davis
