We can make history at the Port tomorrow!

by Harvey Goldberg
With ILWU Local 10 expected to not to cross our picket lines and support from Mayor Dellums, this could turn into a major milestone for the anti-war movement. Come out and help make history!

The word we get from ILWU Local 10 is that they what they've always done - honor the communities picket lines. The letter of support we received from Mayor Ron Dellums is another indication of how much political support we have. People power manifested in strong mass communitypickets, plus labor solidarity, plus support from local politicians is a winning formula.

We're poised to sound a powerful message that will be heard not only throughout the Bay Area, but also nationally. It's up to us to do our part. Come out and join the pickets tomorrow and help make history!

Incidently, those who doubted they'd see much difference between the Dellums and Brown administrations in Oakland are seeing a big difference emerge here. Under Jerry Brown the police were given license to shoot and attack non-violent protesters at the Port on April 7, 2003. Afterwards, Brown defended the police assault. Mayor Dellums letter of support to the Port Action Committee of today will make it extremely hard for the police to misbehave. Brown always was at best aloof from the people's movements for progressive social change, and as in the case of the Port incident in 2003, was completely hostile. Mayor Dellums' letter demonstrates once again that when the rubber hits the road, he sides with the people's movements for peace and social justice.

Councilmember Nancy Nadel also deserves praise for consistent support for activists and our First Amendment freedoms. Her responsiveness to activist concerns truly sets her apart from other City Council members.

It won't be the politician's making it all happen tomorrow though. It will be the grassroots and union rank and file.
