Good Riddance to Jerry Falwell

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca, Beyond Chron (reposted)
In the Castro, Tuesday, May 15 was anything but a day to mourn.

News that right-wing Christian minister Jerry Falwell had died that morning brought about 30 queers to the corner of 18th and Castro during rush hour to attend an “anti-memorial” that was full of good cheer. Representatives of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a group of gay male nuns that Falwell had once attacked, were on hand to help exorcise the spirit of the hate-spewing fundamentalist preacher.

On queervision, an internet discussion group, message lines in emails hailed “ding-dong the witch is dead” and “Falwell is dead day.” Entries on the SF Bay Guardian blog, too, expressed no regret about the 73-year-old bigot’s sudden passing in his office at Liberty University in Virginia.

Some may think it’s tasteless to speak ill of the dead, but certainly not in the case of Jerry Falwell. The man made a lucrative career out of bashing the LGBT community and fighting any gains that women made, such as Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in America. He was also a segregationist who once denounced South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a foe of apartheid, as a phony and not a proper representative of Blacks.

one of the generals of the christianazi coalition is gone - yippee!!! They've had since 2000 to show what they can do and they've screwed it all up; now it's time for the idiots to get out of the way and let the rest of us try to fix it
by Sister Edith Myflesh
A minor correction. The Sisters have not been a group of "gay male" nuns for about 20 years now. The Order's members -- 50 in San Francisco and about 300 world-wide -- include men, women and transpeople who identify as gay, straight and bi. As we say on our website, we are an Order of queer nuns...
Those of the left-wing persuasion, like the person to whom I'm responding, like to think of themselves as these paragons of "enlightenment" and "understanding." But as this previous post proves, the attitude of the left in relation to anything of a conservative nature, including a the death of a very good man, like Jerry Falwell, is the exact opposite. There' no doubt that Falwell said things that were wrong to say, like linking 911 to the actions of homosexual activists or those who support abortion. However, unlike the left, when it spouts off in an inappropriate way, Falwell apologized. And also, in a civilized and democratic society, clear-minded, good, and honest people do not hold some sick celebration of someone's passing, just because they disagreed with the person's views, which never involved wanting to harm, kill, or slander gays or others holding a secular view.

But much of the hard-left is not comprised of honest, clear minded, and good people, especially among those who consider themselves "leaders" of the left. So, to no one's suprise, the left's response has been predictably sick, twisted, disgusting, vile, cruel, extremely hateful, extremely bigoted, and willfully and knowingly vicious. In fact, the left's hatred for Jerry Falwell is so unhinged, illogical, hysterical, and baseless it proves that the hard left is no different than the KKK in its thinking and in much of its behavior. The only difference between the two groups is one of ideology: the hard left is secular and left wing, while the KKK is religious and right wing. Because in their idiotic fanaticism, both groups think nothing of spewing toxic bile to support their backward and imbecilic ideology!

Whaaat? Hanging African-Americans: a religious act? Burning crosses on lawns to threaten minorities the same as dressing in drag and making fun of gay oppressors? You have got to be kidding. The KKK is a terrorist organization whose masked and hooded leaders are powerful "pillars of the community" that uses threats of violence to further crimes against powerless minorities.

Have you ever heard of liberals, gays, or other "lefties" lynching Christians? Tying them to a truck with a chain and dragging them to death? It has never happened, not even once. Falwell spurred violence against gays by misguided "Christian" bigots. At least I know who the real God is smiling down upon.

Ever hear of Fundamentalist Christians getting told they are not allowed into Heaven because they hate others so much and hypocritically say they "pray for their souls" to cover up their bigotry? Maybe it's about time.

I've met the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and I found them to be hysterically funny and if they got under the skin of some Christian Right folks that's too bad. They had it coming for a long time.

The difference between the far left and the far right in the USA is the far left waits patiently for their opponents to die while the far right makes plans to kill theirs.

I want to amend my last statement:

The difference between the far left and the far right in the USA is the far left waits patiently for their opponents to die, then celebrate; while the far right makes plans to kill theirs, after which they give pious eulogies.

To Jimmy:

That's why I said that the hard-left is like the KKK in much of its behavior - not all of it. No the hard left doesn't go out and lynch those with which it disagrees (at least not for right now) but just like the KKK, many in the hard left dress up in costumes, mock those that they hate, and spouts hate-filled and vitriol against them. So especially as the hard left reaction to Jerry Falwell's passing shows, the KKK and hard left share much in common.
by Jimmy
Nothing wrong or illegal with "dressing up in costumes" if they are for humorous purposes. There is freedom of speech in this country you know.Even for the KKK. However no gay or lesbian or transgender group that I know of has ever advocated violence and I can pretty much guarantee you it will never happen. It is a pacifist group and always has been.

THe "costumes" of the KKK are not costumes, they are uniforms (hooded!) designed to inspire fear and intimidation via threat of violence, which that group has a long history of including murder. If you are afraid of the Holy Sisters' performances and harmless antics or the "far left" you must be suffering from serious paranoid delusions. Politically inspired murder in the USA is almost exclusively the tactic of the far right. Read the history books!

Another important point I want to make:

The Holy Sisters does not go into conservative communities and march down main street, giving speeches advocating chasing heterosexuals out of town, denying them rights, etc. and appearing in front of peoples homes with torches late at night chanting threats.

What they do is go out in their own communities to give "performances" that are satirical in nature, mocking those that wake up every day thinking of new ways to marginalize and demonize them, denying them rights accorded other citizens (hey that's the least anyone in those circumstances should do!) but that is in the tradition of peaceful resistance.

Your comparison is so weak it is almost funny.
by Jimmy
Oh those vile hateful Munchkins, full of vitriol and Godless disrespect for the Wicked Witch of the North-who, even though she did make threats and did some bad things, was still only a human-I think. How dare they celebrate her horrible death (crushed by a house belonging to a liberal family from Kansas-who never paid her living relatives any recompense) with songs and laughter and dancing? this is a disgusting example of how Munchkins are just as bad as Wicked Witches if not worse.
