Edwards Campaign Sets Blogging Policy

by David Roknich (roknich(at)electromagnet.us)
"We're beginning a great debate about the future of our country, and we can't let it be hijacked. It will take discipline, focus, and courage to build the America we believe in." Unlike other candidates, Edwards has taken a public stand on what employees can do on their own blogs.
Perhaps the statements that Amanda Marcotte's and Melissa McEwan make on their own blogs aren't the kinds of things that John Edwards would say as part of his political campaign, but should he fire them for their remarks? Bill Donohue of the Catholic League thinks they should be fired. Without showing disrespect for the Catholics, Edwards has shown no delay in how our country should display tolerance and cherish freedom of expression.

Just the fact that he has a "blogging policy" for his staff is an indicator that perhaps he really is in touch with the times, unlike most of our political leaders.

Some state have laws that protect the the activities of employees outside the workplace: freedom of expression is in general under protection of the First Amendment. As a former union leader, John Edwards appreciates the rights of workers: the issue has implications for the protection of union organizers which I'm sure he understands. A detailed discussion is online at the Electronic Frontier Foundation: http://www.eff.org/bloggers/lg/faq-labor.php

It's a good thing he responded quickly: his own blog has already drawn 200 reponses in the past hour.

more soon, meanwhile the hot topic is at the John Edwards 08 Blog
