"FROM THE BOTTOM!" - JOHN ROSS REPORTS BACK FROM THE MEXICAN UPHEAVAL AT NEW COLLEGE
FRIDAY OCTOBER 27 at 7:00 PM
New College Theater, 777 Valencia Street, San Francisco
Author/correspondent/poet/and globe-trotting troublemaker John Ross delivers a report back from the social upheaval in Mexico that followed the stealing of the 2006 presidential election, and its message for frustrated U.S. voters at New College, 777 Valencia Street in San Francisco's Mission district Friday evening October 27th at 7 PM.
In a series of electrifying dispatches from the streets of Mexico City following the fraud-marred July 2nd election and a seven week occupation of the capital by supporters of leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Ross reported on the massive resistance of "los de abajo" ("those from below") to the imposition of right-winger Felipe Calderon as the next president of Mexico.
Video produced by New College Media Studies MA students and faculty of the huge "planton" (sit-in) and the marches of millions to protest the vote stealing will accompany Ross's talk.
ZAPATISTAS! Making Another World Possible - Chronicles of Resistance 2000-2006, Ross's fourth volume on the Zapatista rebellion, has just been published by Nation Books in New York and will be available at the talk as will be BOMBA! his latest chapbook featuring poems inspired by the author's visit to Palestine to pick in the olive harvest and his stint in Baghdad as a human shield in the run-up to Bush's genocidal war.
John Ross is the winner of both the American Book Award and the ACLU's Uppie (for Upton Sinclair) prize - the last for his penultimate volume "Murdered Capitalism - 150 Tears of Life @ Death on the U.S. Left" which won high praise from Beat Generation godfather Lawrence Ferlinghetti and America's most elusive novelist Thomas Pynchon.
John Ross is a regular contributor to the San Francisco Bay Guardian, The Nation, The Texas Observer, Noticias Aliadas (Lima), La Jornada (Mexico City), Democracy Now, Flashpoints, and the on-line left magazine Counterpunch. He will be teaching a seminar on Rebel Journalism in the New College Media Studies MA Program this October and November.
Suggested donation at the door to support Ross's work is $5 but no one will be turned away.
