--- On the morning of February 24, 2003, agents of the U.S. Drug
Enforcement Administration launched a sting called Operation Pipe Dreams
and forced themselves through the door of Tommy Chong's California home,
with automatic weapons drawn. As a result of the raid on his home; the
simultaneous ransacking of his son's company, Chong Glass; and the Bush
administration's determination to make an example out of the "Pope of Pot;"
Chong was sentenced to nine months in prison because his company shipped
bongs to a head shop in Pennsylvania that was a front for the DEA.

Beloved stoner comedian Tommy Chong is now older, wiser, and officially an
ex-con. His just published memoir, the "I Chong: Meditations from the
Joint" (hardcover, $23.95), tell his side of the story. Introspective,
inspiring, and incendiary, it is a spiritual exploration of his time in
prison, and a political indictment of the eroding civil liberties in
post-9/11 American society.

Josh Wolf (blogger) jailing & 1st Amendment - Hearing

WHAT: Hearing on the First Amendment and the jailing of Josh Wolf
WHEN: Thursday August 10th at 10am

The Bush administration has taken it's assault on the freedom of the press to San Francisco. On August 1st, video journalist Josh Wolf was jailed for refusing to hand over video footage of a 2005 WTO protest to a federal grand jury.

The incident in question involves damage to an SFPD cruiser, but the federal government is intruding into San Francisco's jurisdiction by using the pretext that the SFPD receives federal funding.

Even more troubling is the precedent this ruling sets: that the government can seize journalists' notes and materials at any time. This would have a chilling effect on the ability of the press to investigate the government.

Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi invites you to participate in a public hearing on a resolution calling for the federal government to respect the First Amendment guarantee of a free press. The hearing will be in the Rules Committee on Thursday, August 10th at 10am in City Hall room 263.

SUMMER WORKSHOPS For Building Professionals Thurs., Aug. 10, 4-6 pm

Lucchesi Community Center, 320 North McDowell Blvd., Petaluma

Building professionals interested in meeting tomorrow’s demands for green building in Petaluma are invited to attend a green building workshop being offered this summer by the City of Petaluma and Petaluma Build It Green. Workshop date is Thursday, August 10, from 4 to 6 pm at the Lucchesi Community Center in Petaluma.

The workshop is designed to prepare experienced and novice business professionals for the upcoming fall launch of Petaluma Build It Green Week. This new program is geared for home-owners and property-owners.

The two hour session will examine Petaluma’s green building principles and practices and how to incorporate them into already established professional services. Topics will also include an overview of how building professionals can participate in the voluntary points-based program as well as marketing tips to help participants compete in the fast-growing green marketplace.

Along with providing valuable information for those interested in more sustainable, healthy residential or commercial construction in Petaluma, certification and free Building Professional Toolkits with also be available.

Petaluma’s Build It Green Launch will be held Oct. 2-7. The week of activities for consumers includes two hour-long public programs and a Friday Film Night series, concludes with a half day of workshops, demonstrations, exhibits, related kids activities, and optional home tours.

Both the workshop for building professionals and the consumer awareness activities of the October launch week reflect the City’s commitment to responsible development and environmental stewardship.

hoot, and they are coming to town!

If you've ever seen Seamen at BM, SRL is the authentic article.
These guys regularly get kicked out of town the night before the
event by the fire marshals. Of course, that's not going to happen on
the 11th, but the show will not be something to be missed. All the
drama of a war zone with the choreography of Cirque Du Soleil. But
bring your earplugs! A gas mask isn't a bad idea to pack if you have
one handy, but it's unlikely you would need it these days.

The last show I saw of theirs was legend, out on pier 70 in SF about

When we hear about soldiers and casualties in war,much too often we perceive
these human beings merely as statistics. Capturing the words and emotions of
the mothers whose sons and daughters are fighting and dying in Iraq,
director Angeliki Giannakopoulos puts a human face on these soldiers in this
extraordinarily powerful portrait of love, suffering and our common
humanity.
These courageous mothers of our country¹s soldiers are still mothers of the
sons and daughters they¹ve raised for nearly two decades. Sons and daughters
they raised to play baseball, to go to the prom, to get married and have
children of their own, but not to risk their livesŠfar from home.
MY CHILD explores how these mothers manage to get through each day knowing
that bullets could be destroying the ³center of their universe.²
And then there are the other mothers. The ones whose children come back in
piecesŠor not at all. How do they carry on when their precious children
return to them, somehow less than when they last saw themŠor after the
messengers of death, dressed in uniform have shown up at their door?

Ralph Schoenman and Mya Shone, producers of the national radio show “Taking
Aim,” present a dramatic exposé of the current wave of U.S. coordinated and
Israeli mass slaughter in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon. They discuss in
compelling and heart-rending detail the U.S. and Israeli murderous agenda,
its timetable and the collusion of client Arab regimes in targeting the
peoples of the region.

From Rafah to, Ramallah and Nablus, from Bint Jbail, Tyre, Sidon and Beirut
to Tripoli, from 1947, 1967 to 1982 and now, an ongoing genocide has been
unleashed – part of a plan to visit the identical agony on the people of
Syria, Iran, Iraq and the region.

This murderous agenda proceeds under the cover of the false category of
terror for which 9/11 was planned, implemented and orchestrated by the U.S.
ruling class and its Israeli cohorts.

Heralded authors of “The Hidden History of Zionism,” “Prisoners of Israel”
and “Homage to Palestine,” Schoenman and Shone, reveal through first hand
testimony and shocking visuals the wholesale massacre and mass expulsion
that emptied Palestine of its population in 1948 and was repeated in an
identical operation in Lebanon in 1982.

In 1982-83, Schoenman and Shone lived in the Palestinian refugee camps as
these were reduced to rubble. They documented the round-up by the Israeli
invaders of males from ages 7 to 70 across Lebanon and took 6,000 affidavits
from the victims’ families. They witnessed and made a photo record of the
mass murder and the mass graves from Ain El Helweh, Rashidieh, Bourj al
Burajneh to Sabra and Shatila in Beirut.

Schoenman and Shone draw from their experiences in Palestine and Lebanon,
their testimony presented to the United Nations, Foreign Ministers and to
the Nordic Commission in Oslo, Norway as well as their years of advocacy on
behalf of the Palestinian struggle for self-determination.

Ralph Schoenman was Secretary General of the International Tribunal on U.S.
War Crimes in Indochina. He worked with Malcolm X with respect to the battle
for the Congo and has negotiated the release of political prisoners in many
countries. He was the Executive Director of the Committee in Defense of the
Palestinian and Lebanese Peoples and the Committee for a Democratic and
Secular Palestine. He is the author of “The Hidden History of Zionism,”
“Iraq and Kuwait: A History Suppressed,” and co-authored with Mya Shone
“Prisoners of Israel” (report for the United Nations) and “Homage to
Palestine.” Ralph Schoenman and Mya Shone co-produce “Taking Aim with Ralph
Schoenman and Mya Shone” heard weekly on Pacifica’s WBAI-NY and nationally
on the Progressive Radio Network.

Mya Shone is an economist and has a long history as an activist involved in
political, community and labor issues. She worked closely with Casa
Nicaragua and Casa El Salvador during the struggles taking place in Central
America, was the coordinator of the Tri-County (Santa Barbara, Ventura, San
Luis Obispo) Labor Party chapter and co-coordinator of the Open World
Conference in Defense of Trade Union Independence and Democratic Rights. She
was the coordinator of the Committee in Defense of the Palestinian and
Lebanese Peoples and the Committee for a Democratic and Secular Palestine.
Mya Shone was also an award-winning documentary filmmaker as well as a
newscaster at KPFK in Los Angeles.

In 1938, David Ben Gurion, who became the first Prime Minister of the
Israeli state, wrote in a letter to his son: "A partial Jewish State is not
the end, but only the beginning. I am certain that we can not be prevented
from settling in the other parts of the country and the region."

In 1937, he declaimed: "The boundaries of Zionist aspirations are the
concern of the Jewish people and no external factor will be able to limit
them."

In 1938, he was more explicit: "The boundaries of Zionist aspirations," he
told the World Council of Poale Zion in Tel Aviv, "include southern Lebanon,
southern Syria, today's Jordan, all of Cis-Jordan [the West Bank] and the
Sinai."

Bertha dead at a few months of age.
September 2005: Ringling did not announce Bertha's birth or death.

Riccardo dead at 8 months of age.
August 4, 2004: Ringling claims he fell off a 19-inch-high-round platform. After making Riccardo suffer all night with two broken legs, Ringling took him to a hospital the next morning where x-rays revealed "severe and irreparable fractures." Riccardo was killed that day.

Benjamin dead at 4 years of age.
1999: Drowned in a pond while attempting to avoid "trainer" Pat Harned, who witnesses said "poked" Benjamin with an ankus. A USDA investigator concluded that seeing and/or being "touched" or "poked" by Harned with an ankus caused physical harm and lead to Benjamin's death. This incident was videotaped but Ringling requested the USDA not release it to the public.

Kenny dead at 3 years of age.
1998: Ringling elephant "trainers" Gunther Gebel-Williams and Mark Gebel, against veterinarian orders, forced Kenny, who was bleeding from his rectum, to perform. Kenny died later that day after passing a large amount of blood from his rectum.

Ringling routinely uses ropes and chains to separate 18-month-old-baby elephants from their mothers. USDA told Ringling that this practice violates Federal law; Ringling defended it calling it "industry standard."

In the wild female elephants never leave their mothers; males leave at about age 13-15 years.

Chained Most of Their Lives
Elephants in the wild can roam up to 50 miles a day. Ringling keeps elephants chained by 1 front and 1 back leg for most of their lives; the rest of the time they are confined in small barren pens in parking lots.

Cindy Sheehan to Move Camp to National Mall
Cindy Sheehan and activists in the growing peace movement plan to
move Camp Casey to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., September
8 - 21. The camp on the Mall will carry the name Camp Democracy at
Fort Fed Up. Organizers intend the camp to bring together peace
activists with activists for social justice, united in demanding a
shift of public resources from war to the needs of people.
Participants will lobby Congress to end all funding of the
occupation of Iraq, and will demand that Congress hold the Bush
Administration accountable for the falsehoods that launched the war
and the abuses of power here at home that have accompanied it. Camp
Democracy is launching an outreach effort to include organizations
in the planning of the camp's activities, which are all in the
initial stages. Organizations already on board are listed on the

Participating organizations and guest experts and celebrities will
provide workshops and training sessions on a wide range of issues,
as well as on communications, voter registration, nonviolent civil
disobedience, lobbying, organizing, media production, and

participation in local government. Musicians will perform concerts.
