Josh Wolf, a stringer journalist, was present at a July 2005 demonstration in San Francisco, where a SFPD car was damaged. Normally the federal government would not get involved in a local issue, but the Bush administration has chosen to take the position that since federal money helped pay for the car, through indirect funding, they are an interested party, and can claim video footage of journalists.

Josh has chosen to defy this absurd claim, as well as stand firm on the ability of journalists to maintain private notes and artifacts. The Grand Jury was empanelled in the Federal Court House, 450 Golden Gate Ave, in San Francisco, late last year. Mr Wolf has been called to reappear on July 20, 2006. There is a Resolution in support of the case submitted by SF Supervisors Ross Mirkarimi and Chris Daly, calling for his protection through the California Shield Law, and local jurisdictional issues.

This interview covers the history of the case as well as other jurisdictional aspects of the Grand Jury process.
