Other Members of Congress
Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese

BACKGROUND: The Human Rights Campaign has been lobbying on Capitol
Hill; mobilizing its members; engaging the press; and working with a
large coalition of civil rights, religious, civil liberties, labor and
professional organizations advocating against the measure. The Human
Rights Campaign organized the collection and distribution of more than
250,000 postcards to the Senate and House in opposition to the
amendment.

On June 7, 2006, the Senate voted 49 to 48, defeating the
discriminatory
amendment for a second time. In 2004, the House voted 227-186,
defeating
the measure. A two-thirds vote is required for passage.

The Human Rights Campaign is the largest national lesbian, gay,
bisexual
and transgender political organization with members throughout the
country. It effectively lobbies Congress, provides campaign support and
educates the public to ensure that LGBT Americans can be open, honest
and safe at home, at work and in the community.
