Tonight's "Q Ball" offers highlights from the 2006 NQAF mixed freely with free food and drink! Opening Reception: Two visual art exhibits: "Le Vasa: Sea Change" — in which Samoan-Japanese fa'afafine/transgender performer and conceptual artist Shigeyuki Kihara from New Zealand joins California-based Samoan painter, poet and filmmaker Dan Taulapapa McMullin for conceptual photographs and paintings on the lives of fa'afafine today — and "Diwali" — a collection of photos that reflect the weekly gatherings and Diwali holiday celebration of a group of MSM (Men who have Sex with Men) in India —

The 14 films honored this year range from "down-and-dirty" low budget dramatizations to full length Oscar ready documentaries and explore themes as disparate as cochlear implants and the love lives of Russian school children. Featuring BEST OF SUPERFEST 2006 winner "WOOD DIARY", U.S. artist David Edwin Meyers' dreamlike interpretation of the life of Walker Woods, an isolated rural artist with a disability, who created haunting wood figures. A transcendent and shimmering reflection on the beauty of ritual and the power of unconditional love and commitment, WOOD DIARY will be screened June 3 and 4 at La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley along with the other 13 SUPERFEST award-winning films. Sponsored by the Corporation on Disabilities and Telecommunication (CDT), a Berkeley-based non-profit. Artist Reception & Performances: Queer Cultural Center (Qcc) and the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center (APICC), in conjunction with the National Queer Arts Festival (NQAF), co-host a major exhibition that asks: How do artists, as individuals and as members of communities, spread hope among the population during times of increasing violence, political conflict and war? Qcc & APICC have collaborated with over 20 arts organizations to curate this exhibition. Live installations include Frank Pietronigro's audience participation work. Kathe Izzo - writer, lover and conceptual artist will freely fall in love with you, unconditionally and with unmitigated passion, for fifteen minutes. Performances by Kirk Read, Shanique Scott, Tara Jepson and Beth Lisick as the dipstick estrogen-powered dynamic duo of Carole Murphy and Mitzi Fitzsimmons, and "The Worst Spoken Word Artist In The World," Danny Thanh Nguyen, co-creator of the literary trash character DJ Berkley.
