DawnWatch: Filmmaker acquitted of felony burglary charges in egg cruelty case -- NY Times 5/5/06
(Note -- please check your local listing re the Saturday 5pm air time for the Genesis Awards given in the last alert. Apparently Comcast in the San Francisco Bay Area is showing it at 2pm.)
-------------------------------------------------------------

Great news in the New York Times today, Friday May 5. In the Metro Briefing section, page B4, or on line at http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/05/nyregion/05mbrfs.html we read:

"LYONS: CHICKEN ADVOCATE NOT GUILTY OF BURGLARY. A novice filmmaker charged with burglary and other crimes after he crept onto a commercial egg farm to document conditions was acquitted yesterday of all charges but criminal trespass. The filmmaker, Adam C. Durand, 26, of Rochester, is part of a group waging a public campaign against a supermarket chain, Wegmans, and its practice of confining hens to cages at its farm in Wolcott. Mr. Durand's lawyers showed jurors in Wayne County Court pictures of live hens caged with dead ones, mice wandering over the egg conveyor, and a hen submerged to the neck in manure. A spokeswoman for Wegmans said the film did not represent conditions on the farm."

You can see the terrific 27 minute film showing conditions on the farm, or watch a trailer for it, at http://www.wegmanscruelty.com
That site also has more press on the case and verdict.

The brief article gives us a nice opportunity for letters to the editor on the treatment of laying hens and other animals used for food.

The New York Times takes letters at letters [at] nytimes.com

Or why not keep an eye out for related articles in your local media -- anything about Wegmans or about eggs will work -- and send a letter to your editor about the Wegmans cruelty case? For example those in Maryland might like to use this information to respond to the Baltimore Sun front page story headed, "Wegmans' spread in Md. greeted with pride;" See http://tinyurl.com/m22vh and write to letters [at] baltsun.com

The Washington Post is also carrying articles on the opening of Wegman's stores. See
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/04/AR2006050401865.html and then the article on the Wegman's Cruelty verdict at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/04/AR2006050401611.html. The Post takes letters at letters [at] washpost.com

Always include your full name, address, and daytime phone number when sending a letter to the editor. Shorter letters are more likely to be published.
