by Beyond Chron (reposted)
On April 8th Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth will be hosting Speak up for Families Day. The event will be held at Civic Center Plaza in an effort to win $10 million for San Francisco families.

In a March 1st press conference the non-profit group announced their “Budget 4 Families” campaign that is striving to halt the rapid migration of San Francisco families. The Coleman Advocates want the voices of families heard. Mayor Gavin Newsom and all district supervisors have been invited to the event to voice their possible support for the $10 million allocation.

Executive Director N’Tanya Lee said that this is a “modest” first step to help make San Francisco livable for families.

“There are two goals for Families Day: first to celebrate the spirit and determination of families. And, second to get a commitment to the budget from the mayor and supervisors,” said Lee. “This will be a fun and festive event.”

There are many factors that will help create a sustainable environment for families and Coleman would like to see the money allocated appropriately. The budget proposal has $3 million allotted for affordable childcare, particularly for low-income parents. $2 million distributed to rental subsidies and an eviction prevention fund, which will provide a safety net for families in affordable housing. Job training would receive $2.5 million as well as violence prevention services.

“Its important to recognize who is being pushed out of San Francisco,” said Lee.

Lee is referring to the fact that the majority of families leaving the city are minorities. It is no secret that San Francisco is geographically segregated. Places in the city plagued with crime and drug use and drug abuse are typically areas where minorities are the majority. This makes the environment undesirable to raise children and leaves parents few options, other than moving out of a the city.

The highest percentages of whites live in districts two, eight and five. The highest percentages of African Americans live in districts nine, eleven and six. For Latinos the highest percentage is in districts nine, eleven and six, according to 2000 Census data.
