by Donna Deiss (tenantsrights [at] sbcglobal.net)
Reported ID theft of $500 from checking account at Wells Fargo 1//2004 not investigated. May 3, 2005 a thief charged $1,580 to the same account overdrawing the account by $550. This was the rent money of two disabled people already under severe stress. One has AIDS and is terminallyill, the other a disabled 57 year old woman..
Wells Fargo neglected to investigate the theft of $500 from a 57 year old disabled woman's checking account in January of 2004. May 3, 2005, $1,580 was withdrawn overdrawing the account by over $500. This was the rent money for herself, a disabled federal shipyyard journeyman and her partner who has AIDS and has serious health issues. Customer service said to close the account tommorrow costing more money and stress the same day the rent must be paid. They said Wells Fargo could not prevent even more charges on the account and it must be closed at the branch itself the next day. Noothing can be done immediately it seems allthough this theft happened within the last 24 hours.

Five charges on the account were each $100 or more to companies such as Nexum, Beyerpay (sp?), Citadell and NT883. It will take 7-10 days to investigate and rrent is due May 5, 2005, tommorrow. Personal information may have been obtained from a complaint filed at complaint@complaints..com.

More controls need to be put on debit Internet purchases and a limit on charges without further verification than just an SSI number and a checking account number.
