Gijón, Spain: Shipyard workers battle riot police
January 27, 2005
One police officer suffered injuries to an arm and a leg in confrontations with the shipard workers of Naval Gijón, who have been engaged in a prolonged battle against privatization and for work contracts.
The workers set fire to barricades in the streets and fired mortars at riot police who responded with rubber bullets. The clashes took place around the Poniente aquarium adjacent to the shipyards. The aquarium has been destroyed by the workers, who have occupied it in the past, since they see it as an example of "speculation" by the City of Gijón, a prioritization of tourism over the shipyard industry.
