Bush Ad Sparks Debate over Digital Altering

by repost
The Bush campaign says it will cease airing a television ad that shows the President speaking in front of a digitally enhanced image of soldiers, altered to make the servicemen appear to be more numerous.

Technology experts have warned that a new digital fake reality could emerge in society unless new rules and laws are implemented to control its rise.

In a campaign advertisement released Wednesday, the images of several soldiers are repeated several times in an attempt to fill out what would have been gaps in a crowd President Bush is shown addressing. After alert bloggers discovered the repetitions yesterday, the Kerry campaign demanded that the ad be taken off the air.

"If they won't tell the truth in an ad, they won't tell the truth about anything else," said Joe Lockhart, a senior Kerry campaign adviser. "The Bush campaign has no choice but to take this ad down immediately and issue an apology for its latest attempt to mislead the American people. Unless George Bush has changed its position on human cloning, it's got to pull this fundamentally dishonest ad."

It is not the first time a manipulated image has caused controversy in the presidential campaign.

Earlier this year, a faked photograph showed Mr Kerry attending a protest rally against the Vietnam war with Jane Fonda, whose controversial visit to Vietnam in the 70s offended many Americans.

The photograph had been mocked up from two separate pictures.
