# This is Burning Man book release party Tue Aug 10 9:30 pm-last call free
Brian Doherty has spent many years writing a book about the history,
characters, and meaning of that thing known as Burning Man. (You might
have heard of it.) That book is now finished and an existing physical
product. Hard to believe, but he wasn't just talking about that goddamn
book for the past two years. He really taped hundreds of hours of
interviews with over a hundred people and took lots of ephedra and
wrote the book. Come hear him read from it. Perhaps hear characters
from the book do dramatic readings of their own dialogue and act out
their own past follies that everyone will now get to read about.
Perhaps see characters from the book punch him in the face. You might
very well be one of the characters in the book! Burning Man! At last
the story can be told! Flash, one of the more interesting characters in
the book, will be tending bar. It's Tuesday night at the Odeon, of
course. Copies of the book will be available in limited quantities at a
significant discount. Doherty will sign one for you and give some long,
nervous explanation about why he took hours of your time for some
stupid interview and maybe you didn't get mentioned in it at all. But
maybe you did! You'll have to read the book to find out.

$5 http://atasite.org ANSWER Film Series: “Murder of Fred Hampton”
With an introduction by Dr. Henry Clark from the West County Toxics
Coalition. Black Panther Party galvanized millions of African Americans
against police repression and brutality, upholding the right of armed
self-defense. The government launched a campaign of murder, jailings and
disinformation to destroy the BPP. This film documents the Chicago
police murder of one of the most charismatic and effective leaders,
Illinois Party chapter chairman, Fred Hampton.
A fiery orator, Hampton was only 20 years old at the time, but his
electrifying words and actions were inspiring young Black people to
demand respect and to insist that their power and voice be felt in local
politics, in any politics. But Fred Hampton’s dream included all people
when he proclaimed in the voice of the prophet, “…if we don’t stop
fascism it’ll stop us all.” 1971, b&w, 88min.

# Thu Aug 19 Who Owns Water? Protecting the World's Water
from Corporate Takeover http://www.citizen.org / water
Fortune magazine has predicted that "water is the oil of the 21
century," and now corporations are rushing to invest in the new
get-rich economy of water. Giant water, energy, food, and shipping
companies have plans to buy water rights, privatize publicly-owned
water systems, promote bottled water, and sell "bulk" water by
transporting it from water rich areas to thirsty markets. As the
world's water becomes scarcer and corporations seek to exploit this
scarcity for profit, people around the world are losing ownership and
control of water resources on which they depend. But water is a human
right; to the extent one has the right to live, one has the right to
water.
Join us for a discussion with Juliette Beck and John Gibler of Public
Citizen's Water for All Campaign. Public Citizen's Water for All
Campaign is dedicated to protecting water as a common resource,
stopping water privatization and bulk water sales, and defending
access to clean and affordable water around the world. Come hear how
people in California and around the world - from Stockton and Gualala
to Bolivia and Bangladesh - are defending the global commons and our
right to water, and find out how you can help. 7 pm - 9 pm
