VICTORY OVER WALMART IN TULARE
by David M Silva (559) 684-0197

This morning Tulare Walmart attempted to cancel the local Green Party's tabling rights to register voters. The Walmart representative called the organizer of the countywide Green Party Voter Registration Working Group and said that they were canceling our summer long reservation to table outside of Walmart. Our organizer immediately told them that he was sorry but they were not going to cancel this most sacred function of democracy. He explained the Pruneyard Decision to Walmart and how it had never failed to win in courts anytime in the past 25 years. The Walmart representative said they were going to register voters themselves. Our Green organizer said that was not good enough and that we would be there Sunday as usual.
Our organizer immediately called the County Elections Department and had to educate them also about the Pruneyard Decision. He then called the City Mayor who was out of the country and left a message that there might be trouble because Greens hold voter registration sacred and would not back down. He then called the City Police. The police immediately called back and assigned an officer to protect our rights to register. The officer called the Walmart representative and told them to "cool it". Shortly thereafter the Walmart representative called our organizer and apologized for giving us a bogus number for their Corporate Lawyers and that we would be allowed to continue with our Voter Registration schedule in front of Walmart in Tulare City each Sunday.
