NARAL Pro-Choice America & PunkVoter.com Launch Youth Outreach Partnership
Nation's Leading Punk Bands to Educate Next Generation of Pro-Choice Activists
Washington DC - NARAL Pro-Choice America, the leading national advocate of personal privacy and the right to choose, announced today that it will partner with Punkvoter.com, a group of the nation’s leading punk musicians, as part of its efforts to educate the next generation of leaders about the Bush Administration’s ongoing efforts to limit the right to choose, restrict access to contraception and deny young people responsible sex education.
The partnership was announced today at Washington’s famed 9:30 Club, where NARAL Pro-Choice America President Kate Michelman appeared at a news conference with members of Pittsburgh’s Anti-Flag, Gainesville’s Against Me!, Philadelphia’s None More Black and Chicago’s Rise Against.
Michelman said: “We’re working with Punkvoter.com to spread the word to young people about the Bush Administration’s relentless attempt to put government into our private lives. By appointing judges who want to criminalize all abortion, limiting access to contraception, and emphasizing so-called ‘abstinence only’ programs that don’t work to prevent teen pregnancy, President Bush has been working from his first day in office to limit reproductive freedom. Young people who’ve never lived in a time when they didn’t have the right to choose shouldn’t wake up one day in a world they don’t recognize. We know that when young people have the facts, they’ll get active to protect their liberty.”
Justin Sane, lead singer/guitarist for Anti-Flag added, “If we don't mobilize now the radical right is only too happy to take us back to the 'good old days' of back alley abortions. None of us can be apathetic about reproductive rights. We must defend a woman's right to choose while she still has it!"
Michelman and Sane outlined a plan to distribute information about NARAL Pro-Choice America and the Bush Administration’s record on choice via email and the internet, outreach at Punkvoter.com events and other joint efforts over the next ten months.
Punkvoter.com is a voter education organization that includes punk musicians and record labels uniting to expose the chaotic policies of the Bush Administration. Punkvoter.com includes Green Day, Foo Fighters, NOFX, Bad Religion, hundreds of musicians and dozens of record labels. With 27 state affiliates and nearly a million members, NARAL Pro-Choice America is the country’s leading pro-choice advocacy group. For more information, visit http://www.prochoiceamerica.org.
