Calling All Youth
The ENI Youth Council was convened to involve youth leadership in the co- creation of a local, community based action in response to Governor
Schwarzenegger’s proposed budget, its cuts in education spending and prioritization of prison spending. The energy, expertise and involvement of youth are critical to the success of this action. This next meeting
will be a safe space for youth organizers to provide input as we define the role of the Youth Council and begin planning for our community action. Please join us!

Background
Education Not Incarceration (ENI) is a coalition of teachers, students, community members and community organizations working in response to the California state budget, its effects on public education and higher education, and prioritization of prison spending. With 5 schools scheduled to be closed this year in Oakland alone and more prisons being opened, our communities are struggling to stay alive, respected, and intact.

On Saturday, January 31, ENI held a community forum to discuss our response to these pressing issues. With more than 120 participants present, the group decided to organize a local, community based action this spring.

We envision a Community Teach-in and Speakout in Oakland tentatively scheduled for Saturday, April 24th, at Mosswood Park. The day will include educational workshops and culminate in a speak out including
artists and performers. In addition, we will invite key decision-makers including Senator Perata, Assemblywoman Chan and State Superintendent
O’Connel to appear and listen to the voices of our communities.
