Get Aboard the Bus for the Global Day of Action, March 20

by Dan Bacher

Momentum is building for the Global Day of Action on March 20, the first anniversary of the U.S. bombing of Iraq. It is essential that we mobilize millions on that day to demonstrate against the Bush administration’s occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan and the increasing repression of civil liberties and rights here at home.

On last February 10, the world saw the largest ever globally coordinated anti-war demonstrations in history. Huge marches and rallies took place in every major world city, as well as in hundreds of smaller communities. Hopefully, this Global Day of Action will again bring out millions of people to protest the continuing occupation of Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan and other countries.

The Call to Action issued by the March 20  National Coalition includes as its themes "Bring the troops home now!,"  "End colonial occupation from Iraq to Palestine and everywhere!," "Money for jobs, education, healthcare and housing - Not war!" and "Stop the attacks on civil rights and civil liberties!" The call has received over 1,500 endorsements from individuals and organizations, including the Central America Action Committee.

Major regional demonstrations will take place at Dolores Park in San  Francisco, Times Square in New York City, Hollywood and Vine in Los Angeles, and at Michigan & Pearson in Chicago. Buses, vans and car caravans are organizing people  from across the East Coast, South, Midwest and West  Coast to attend these regional demonstrations. Others  are organizing local protests in cities and towns  across the country. Volunteers across the country are  handing out flyers, and putting up posters and  stickers to help spread the word.

The urgency of showing support for the March 20 actions is underscored by the recent relevations of former U.S. weapons inspector David Kay and others that there were no “Weapons of Mass Destruction” in Iraq, even though the Bush administration used the “presence” of WMDs as the pretext to invade and bomb Iraq.

I encourage everybody who is outraged by the constant lies, aggression and insanity coming out of Washington to attend the demonstration in San Francisco on March 20. People will gather at 11 a.m.  at Dolores Park (18th St and Dolores) and then march to the Civic Center.

Sacramento Area Peace Action is now selling tickets on the biodiesel bus to the March 20 demonstration in San Francisco. Ride with your fellow activists from Sacramento and the surrounding area. Tickets are $20; limited low income tickets are available (and donations for low income scholarships appreciated).

In a show of labor solidarity with the Global Day of Action, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 10 voted  at its January 15 membership meeting to hold a Stop Work meeting on March 20 to shut down San Francisco Bay ports. The Stop Work meeting will be held in solidarity with the actions planned in San Francisco and around the world.

Meanwhile, the March 20 National Coalition and the March 20 Mobilizing Committee had the second of two meetings on Thursday, February 6,  attended by representatives of more than 20 organizations, networks and coalitions, and came to a unanimous decision to have a united demonstration on March 20 in New York City.

The two coalitions also agreed unanimously to make public a joint statement, the language of which was mutually agreed to at that meeting, and to share all available and pending permits for New York City. The spirit and enthusiasm of the meeting reflected the sentiment of the broad progressive movement in the U.S. that we should all stand united and march together on March 20.
