Richmond/San Pablo Residents March for Education!!!

Downer Elementary filled with asbestos, lead paint, not earthquake safe
and the district seeks to pocket $28 million from Bond Measures

Monday night, February 2nd, District officials announced they will not be closing schools, for 1 year, but what about the $350 million they are keeping from School Bonds M & D?
Richmond/San Pablo community members including students, parents, teachers and activists will lead a march to combat the lack of renovation in a school filled with asbestos, lead paint, a drainage system filled with sewage, and buildings that are about to fall apart.

2-mile march set to depart from Downer Elementary (1777 Sanford Ave., San Pablo, CA) to the School District Meeting at DeJean Middle School (3400 MacDonald Ave., Richmond, CA).
Wednesday, February 4, 2004
2-Mile March for our Kids
Gathering begins: 4:30 p.m. at Downer Elem.-1777 Sanford Ave. San Pablo, CA. 94806
March @ 5p.m.
Destination: Dejean Middle School -3400 MacDonald Ave., Richmond, CA.
School Board Meeting Begins at 6:30p.m.

Downer, the largest elementary school in the district, will lose 87% of its renovation budget, which was already approved by voters in 2000 and 2002 in measures D and M. The population at Downer Elementary is composed of approximately 83% Latino, 8% Asian, 7% African-American and 2% other.
This is the first time that this immigrant community is marching for their rights. We will not allow school closures to take place. We will also not allow our kids to be bused out of our community.
