The SHORTWAVE REPORT 9/5/03 ¡Listen Globally!

by Dan Roberts (outfarpress [at] saber.net)
A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quick download (3.3MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast. Netherlands, Spain, Cuba, and Russia.
Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (September 5) is up at the website http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality (13.2MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (29:00) It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org
There are several other streams that work better- http://www.freakradio.org Freak Radio Santa Cruz (96.3fm) now streams this program on Friday at 9:30am (PDST)
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)- http://www.radiolavalamp.org
streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.
And the Partytown streams are great and informative- http://www.partytown.com/radio
This week's show features stories from Spanish National Radio, Radio Netherlands, Radio Havana Cuba, and the Voice of Russia.
From Spain- The Israeli Defense Minister favors expelling Palestinian President Yassar Arafat. The Palestinian militant group Hammas is considering a new cease-fire with Israel. The European Union says the UN needs to play a wider role in post-war Iraq. The ministers of the new Iraqi governing council were sworn in, and the Polish division with Spanish and Central American troops replaced the US troops in the central south zone. Mexican President Fox replaced the Energy and Environment ministers with more conservative party members. Venezvuala’s Supreme Court made a controversial decision about whether President Chavez could run again if he were to be recalled.
From Netherlands- In Argentina there is confusion over new releases and indictments of former military junta officers, because Spain is no longer seeking their extradition. The US has repeated that they will not talk to Columbian FARC rebels, while Brazil has offered to mediate between rebels and the UN. A UN conference on worldwide desertification was held in Cuba with no concrete results. Dutch doctors can now prescribe cannabis to patients and pharmacies are stocking the medicine- here’s an interview with one of the government’s chief providers. US forces occupying Iraq are being charged with killing unarmed civilians in US civil courts.
From Cuba- Washington has asked for UN support in Iraq, a humbling policy reversal. At the UN conference on worldwide desertification, the Friends of the Earth have pointed out how WTO policies are escalating the ruination of agricultural land.
From Russia- Member countries of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty are meeting in Austria, but the chances of a global nuclear test ban are slim. Saudi Arabia and Russia are the current leading exporters of oil- the Crown Prince just visted Putin and they are the best of friends.
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!
