The SHORTWAVE REPORT 8/22/03 ¡Listen Globally!

by Dan Roberts (outfarpress [at] saber.net)
A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.2MB) and quick download (3.3MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast. Netherlands, China, Russia, Spain, and Cuba.
Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (August 22) is up at the website http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality (13.2MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (29:00) It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org
There are several other streams that work better- http://www.freakradio.org Freak Radio Santa Cruz (96.3fm) now streams this program on Friday at 9:30am (PDST)
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)- http://www.radiolavalamp.org
streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.
And the Partytown streams are great and informative- http://www.partytown.com/radio
This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, China Radio International, the Voice of Russia, Spanish National Radio, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From Netherlands- As of Wednesday, the number of those dying from the heat wave in France was estimated at 10,000. International journalists have called for an investigation of the murder of 17th journalist by the US military in Iraq. Then a longer piece on the situation of independent journalists covering the US war on Iraq. Last weekend saw a sharp increase in terrorist attacks in Afghanistan- whether these attacks were by Taliban members from other regions is unclear.
From China- China has signed a landmark contract with Unocal and Shell oil firms to develop deposits in the East China Sea.
From Russia- Russia is forming a free-trade area with 4 nations formerly in the Soviet Union. Then a review of a new US weapon using gamma-ray pulses, which many fear will trigger a new type of arms race.
From Spain- US Defense Sec Rumsfeld officially announced the return of funding for drug interception flights over Columbia. Opponents of Venezvualan President Chavez have launched a recall referendum, while Columbian Pres Uribe has suggested a link between FARC rebels and Chavez. Then a press review on the latest murder of an independent journalist in Iraq by US military. And some press reviews on the tragic bombing of UN headquarters in Iraq.
From Cuba- A piece on the bombing of the UN in Bagdhad, a frustrating blow that may reflect the frustrating situation the UN finds itself in- trying to aid the general populace that feels overwhelmed by invading forces posing as liberators.
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!
