Action call, SWAT the movie

This is a "call to action"? Sounds more like one slightly jarbled thought. I would say we should keep indymedia with a little more standards than this.

The "SWAT" billboards have become a real eyesore in Oakland. They are all over the place.

Maybe we can sue Clear Channel and Viacom (the two dominant billboard companies) under Oakland's blight ordinances to have the ads for "SWAT" removed.

I definitely think that the movie-going public will need to be informed that movies glorifying the militarization of law enforcement are not entertainment.

Some of the billboards are at ground level. So, how about, on white paper, big black letters on a white background, saying, "For free tickets, dial 1-800 kilpigs...or something like that.

My head is still sore from looking at them, there are some odvious modifications that could be done, like cross hairs on the picture of the "hero". But I know indymedia is a creative brain trust of phenominal proportions, so kick out the jams.

SWAT teams are paramilitary units, that originally responded exclusively to hostage situations, but are now used to respond to an ever-increasing number of situations, including protests and other "civil disturbances" (such as youth of color exercising their supposed right to freely assemble). As such, they provide anything to protection to many people in our society. Get it? Check your facts before you call people "morons," unless you want to have egg on your face.

1. Even if that SFPD technically doesn't have a SWAT team, they clearly engage in special units training.

mr.useyourbrain, in case you haven't noticed a chunk of the criticisms of swat teams and the like come from the "extreme" right--citing their arguments against jack-booted thugs and the like from knocking down their doors. i've never seen a liberal fearing "black helicopters" or lamenting over ruby ridge. if anything, i've seen more liberals or rather-left-of-center types applauding the gestapo "protecting" us from "evil" drugusers or gun owners, kicking down doors and shooting before any trial...

Depends on who you're talking to on the left. Communities of color have been raising hell about how the popo breaks down doors and shoot people for years. Also, the whole crowd control thing has caused more than a little bit of attention from both community groups and activists. Not everybody who is on the left is all like "yay, big jack-booted government at any cost"; if anything, most people on the left aren't that way. In other words, the liberals you're talking about are only one part of the left, not the left as a whole.
