WHAT: Youth Speak Out Against Repression at Oakland High School
WHEN: Friday June 6, 2003 at 12:35 pm
WHERE: Oakland High School at the gate on 1023 MacArthur Blvd.
On April 23, 2003 two Oakland High School students were interrogated by the Secret Service for alleged remarks of dissent against the president in a classroom discussion about the war. As two boys were interrogated and had their civil liberties threatened Principal Mok did nothing, including failing to notify the parents. This incident highlights the daily repression that is happening at Oakland High School. Principal Mok has created an environment where youth are criminalized for having opinions that differ from mainstream ideology. Students at Oakland High School have suffered a great deal at the hand of Principal Mok and on Friday June 6, 2003 they unite to say NO MORE.
Principal Mok has suspended students for possessing informational flyers about holding a walkout, in violation of the California State Code. He has seized and discarded hundreds of dollars worth of anti-war leaflets. Under his command barbed wire was put around the school to prevent youth from staging a walk out. He has even lied to outraged parents when they contacted him regarding the doors to the school being closed during a fire. Youth have been sent to the back of the room and out of class altogether for voicing opinions opposing the war and President Bush. The last act of repression occurred when Mok allowed youth to be harassed by the Secret Service interrogation.
On June 6, 2003 Oakland High Youth will demand the end to repercussions for expressing political thoughts and opinions. Youth and community organizations will band together to demand an end to this era of New McCarthyism.
This event is endorsed by: The Coalition Against the Repression of Students, Not In Our Name, Pueblo, Kids First, Real Hard, Youth Together, and Oakland United
