Downtown San Jose Evacuated Sat Night
Downtown San Jose was evacuated by SJPD last night, and today the papers aren't explaining it.
Last night (Saturday) at 11:30p, we came to the Santa Clara exit on northbound 87, to go clubbing in downtown San Jose.
It took us 20 minutes just to get from the offramp into the street, traffic was so bad. We figured some show had let out at the San Jose arena, and we just hit uber-bad traffic.
Then we saw flashing emergency lights 2 blocks down on Santa Clara, with one traffic light flashing red. We figured there'd been some traffic accident.
Another 20 minutes and 2 blocks later, we finally crawl to the intersection. Cops were directing traffic, forcing everyone to turn left. The road behind him (east down Santa Clara) was empty for several blocks.
We turned left (going north now), and continued to crawl with literally hundreds of other cars. We could only go straight - at every single intersection, a cop was parked, blocking the turn with his car, and road flares out. Peering past them, it was the same story - empty streets for 2-3 blocks.
We were all eventually forced out of town, eventually reaching 880N - we werent even allowed to cross the bridge to go south like we wanted. Literally every single intersection for miles was blocked, forcing every car in downtown San Jose out of the area.
Today, there is no mention of this on the front pages of the online edition of the SF Chronicle, SJ Mercury, or Santa Cruz Sentinel.
What happened last night? Does anyone know?
