The SHORTWAVE REPORT 1/17/03 ¡Listen Globally!

by Dan Roberts (outfarpress [at] saber.net)
A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quick download (3.3MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast. Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Russia, and Cuba.
Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (January 17) is up at the website http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality 13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (29:11) It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org
There are several other streams that work better- http://members.cruzio.com/~frsc/ Freak Radio Santa Cruz (96.3fm) streams this program on Friday at 5:35pm (PST) and on Monday at 9amPST.
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)- http://www.rinku.zaq.ne.jp/bkaec205/
streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.
And the Partytown streams are great and informative- http://www.partytown.com/radio
This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, Spanish National Radio, Radio Deutsche Welle, the Voice Of Russia, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From Netherlands- N Korea rejected the US offer for aid in exchange for ceasing its nuclear program, calling the offer a “publicity stunt.” In Zimbabwe, the ruling party called reports of Robert Mugabe stepping down “wishful thinking.” High-profile officials in Guatemala, such as judges and politicians, are being murdered at an alarming rate.
From Spain- In Bolivia, clashes between coca farmers and the military have resulted in the death of a youth and the arrest of 100. Amnestry International urged the EU to make human rights the focus of its new police mission in Bosnia.
From Germany- A review of the career of Pres Victor Havel of the Czech Republic, whose term expires in Feb. Then a press review from Wednesday, covering the wavering support in Europe for an Iraq war.
From Russia- A commentary on British anti-war attitudes and upcoming demonstrations.
From Cuba- US-based Human Rights Watch published a blistering attack on Bush’s policy of ignoring human rights in pursuit of the so-called war on terrorism. A Portugese Nobel prize winning writer asserts that democracy doesn’t exist, that finance capital is the world’s only power. The new Ecuadorian President Guiterrez took the oath of office, vowing to govern in the name of the poor, and attack corruption.
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!
