Chavez has the RIGHT to speak as he wishes, to express himself as he wishes

I have just read a copy of a letter that was recently sent to me by email:

The letter (quite long), is apparently from Gustavo Cisneros Rendiles, dated January 11, 2003, New York, addressed to Hugo Chavez, President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, addressing the comments that Chavez made regarding the Cisneros on his latest weekly Sunday televised address to the country.

The Cisneros are the wealthiest family in Venezuela - according to Forbes, estimated net worth of 5.3 Billion $US - and owners, amongst other things, of a portion of Venezuelan media, the same media which has been fervently crucifying Chavez for many months now.

I watched Chavez’s televised address, in which he called the Cisneros fascists and irresponsible ... referring to how the Cisneros are partially responsible for assisting in the slow destruction of the Venezuelan economy through their control of the existing anti-Chavez media frenzy and their support for the opposition.

Chavez also mentioned that he will begin court proceedings against some of the media for breaking the rules of their charter ... which include maintaining fair, equitable and truthful reporting of facts; something that they OBVIOUSLY have failed to maintain.

Too bad that the world out there does not always have direct access to some of the Venezuelan television stations: Globovision, Venevision, RCTV and Venezolana de Television. Any reasonable human being, comparing stations, would quickly see the deformation and lunacy existent in the privately-owned stations (PRO OPPOSITION) versus the usually calm and realistic programming offered by the government run station, Venezolana de Television.

Gustavo Cisneros’ alleged letter to Chavez expresses, in a lengthy and very eloquent fashion, his (Gustavo Cisneros’ ?) disagreement with Chavez’ mode of expression and denigration of his family in such a public manner ... he also blatantly blames Chavez for failing to maintain economic order within Venezuela and for his lack of collaboration with the private sectors of industry.

  • He also implies that Chavez, being the top representative of Venezuela should speak and comport himself in a manner that dignifies his position and rise above his passions.

I quote from the letter (which the opposition is now back-tracking from at a rate of knots):

“Magistratura que le obliga a elevarse sobre sus fantasmas y empinarse por encima de sus pasiones, sus bajas pasiones.”

“Office that obliges you to elevate yourself above your fantasies and rise above your passions, you lowly passions.”

I would thus deduce that according to Gustavo Cisneros, Pierre Trudeau should not have been Prime Minister of Canada either (although elected several times over). Pierre Trudeau would give the finger to the media and others during publicly-televised reports ... he openly condemned and criticized bankers and industrialists as being corrupt, ruthless and heartless. How about Ghandi (the father)? I do not know what or how he spoke, but I do know that he could not have achieved his goal without passion.

We are in new times Gustavo Cisneros:

I believe that you are still living in the “old days” in which “protocol” and “etiquette” were a MUST if one was to be considered “civilized” and “worthy”, worthy of public office, worthy of a managerial post, worthy of acceptance.

You, Gustavo Cisneros, probably consider yourself “civilized”. However, in your letter to Mr. Chavez, the reader infers that you strongly support the civilized and peaceful actions of the opposition. In fact, the actions of the opposition are NOT CIVILIZED and they are NOT PEACEFUL.

There is nothing peaceful about enticing people to shut down the petroleum industry, the transportation industry, the schools and the banks ... that is called insubordination to the State, treason, is criminal in nature, and is a crime against humanity!

What the opposition is doing is “aiding and abetting” in a serious crime against all Venezuelans who depend of the infrastructures that they are trying to paralyze or destroy!

How many Venezuelans depend on these infrastructures?

Finally, I do believe that Mr. Chavez has the RIGHT to speak as he wishes, to express himself as he wishes, in the tone that he so chooses. Mostly, he also has a responsibility to all Venezuelans to SPEAK UP on issues that former Venezuelan governments conveniently neglected to share with the “less educated” Venezuelans.

Mr. Chavez also has a moral obligation to the poorer Venezuelans and to the world, to expose to the world the reality of the “conventional” middle and upper classes of the Venezuela. Realities such as paying maids an average of $12-15 a day and consider that a "reasonable wage."

My foot!

It seems to me that Mr. Chavez, even with his “less-educated and disparaging style of speech” is doing more to honor the position of President of the Republic (and thus representative of the true needs and requirements of the people) than any other past President.

*Venezuela's oil coup-strike-lockout for the rich. Help President Chavez! In 1974 80% of oil income went to the state. Today 80% of Venezuelan oil income goes to the rich, and to "operating costs." Only 20% goes to the state. Chavez reforms will help reverse this in 2003. This is why the coup-plotters are in such a hurry to overthrow the fairly-ELECTED Chavez government, to prevent these reforms, and to reverse others already-implemented.
